Show THE THUNDERBIRD Two professors to retire BY STAB MONDAY 1988 MAY 9, PAGE 7 Presents: SUZANNE STEWART THE HUNT SUSC will lose two faculty members of long standing when Ella Van Groningen and Eugene T. Woolf retire from teaching this year. Van Groningen, head of the home economics department for the past seven years, will retire after 25 years at SUSC. Originally from the Netherlands, she received both her bachelor's degree and master of arts degree from San Jose State University. During her time at SUSC, Van Groningen has served as a member of the State Consumer and Home Economics Board and as a state board member for Delta Kappa Gamma (teacher's honor society). Van Groningen received SUSC's Distinguished Educator Award in 1985 and was named 1987 Woman of the Year by the Cedar City Business and Professional Women's Club. Through education, she hopes "to offer all members of society the opportunity to develop their different talents and to give everyone more access to knowledge, work and above all, decision making." Professor of English and philosophy Eugene T. Woolf will retire after 35 years at SUSC. Woolf received his bachelor's degree and his master of arts degree both from the University of Utah. He began work on his doctorate at Stanford University and eventually completed the degree in 1962 at the U of U. Woolf has published numerous professional papers and is the author of a book entitled Theodore Wmthrop: Portrait of an American Author Woolf has held a number of administrative positions at SUSC, including director of the Grace A. Tanner Center for Human Values. "I have enjoyed my teaching here at SUSC," said Woolf. Author to examine culture "Icon and Chant," an audio-visu- al presentation S; ?r- fir'' on Russia and its cultural backgound, will be presented today in Centrum 227 Dr. Tom Rogers is the guest speaker for the presentation which will focus on elements of history, literature, art and music in the Soviet Union Rogers is director of the honors program at Brigham Young University and is a featured speaker on the Utah Endowment for the Humanities Program Bureau The program is free to the public and starts at 7 p m It is sponsored by the Utah Beta Chapter of the Alpha Chi National Honor Scholarship Society A short reception will follow the lecture, according to Alpha Chi member Eulail Pickering Rogers has traveled widelv in Eastern Europe with extended stays in the Soviet Union, Poland, Yugoslavia and Germany.
