Chessters place in tourney BY KRISTEN EYRING SUSC's chess club competed April 23 and 24 in Salt Lake City annual James Decker Memorial chess tournament. Four of SUSC's best players competed in the tournament and came home with three first place awards. The club chose the players after they competed in the SUSC chess competition. At the home tournament, Neil Gunnel took first place, Doug Shearer placed third, Ben Kester fifth and Julie Poe sixth. Dr. Merrel Jones, the club's adviser, placed second. At the Decker Memorial competition, Poe took first in the Women's Division, Kester took first in the unrated class and Shearer took first in the C class. In the first two rounds of the tournament the players were allowed an hour and 30 minutes to make their first 40 moves. If by that time no one has won, the judges determine the winner based on the number of pieces each player captured and the layout of the board. Each following round, the players were given two hours to make their first 40 moves. Poe, as newly elected president, said at this point the club has no definite plans, but they hope to organize a tournament here at the college for all of Utah to participate in. The club recently elected Kester as vice president, Steve Montgomery as secretary and David Bistline as treasurer.
