College administrators planned to use the old building, which has undergone several transformations for varied uses over th years, as an academic service center, but failed to receive bond funding from the state legislature to keep it open. The building's renovation into an academic service center would have created a small business development center, a center for tourism studies, a resource repository, and a conference and workshop center. The building would have also housed a physical fitness center and a banquetmeeting facility. The old Student Center will close this quarter because of increases in mandatory costs not covered in the current college budget. Administrators will direct the money saved in building maintenance to insurance and employee medical premiums and other costs not covered in the legislative budget approved tor SUSC. All of the offices and services formerly located in the old building moved to the new Student Center with the exception of the il Multicultural Center. It will move into the Braithwaite Center in in place of the forensics squad room on the third floor The forensics squad room is scheduled to move into LI 106 a large classroom on the bottom floor of the Library'. The old Student Center will open again for June's commencement activities and Feastes for the Utah Shakespearean Festival this summer However, student dances will be in the Physical Education Building gymnasium and not the Great Hall. When the college can afford to open the old student building again, it will house a banquetmeeting room in the old snack bar, a fitness center in the old cafeteria, and offices for the academic services throughout the building as the Division of Continuing Education has plans to use the facility for outreach and other programs. mid-Apr- The old Student Center will sit vacant until tundmg can be found to maintain and to renovate it for new use.
