Show PACE THE THUNDERBIRD 10 MONDAY MARCH 28, 1988 Bookstore's size is tremendously enlarged - C- v USC's new Bookstore offers students a larger selection of merchandise and convenience items, expanded general reading materials and its own outside entrance. The separate entrance allows students to go directly to the Bookstore from the Adminstration Building parking area. When students enter the Bookstore from inside the new Center or from the outside, they will immediately notice the modern facility and orderly display of merchandise. They will also note a larger textbook area arranged by subject rather than class number. Dennis Ohms, Bookstore manager, said this is an experiment and student response to this arrangement may be a determining factor as to whether texts will be permanently catalogued by subject. The experiment was undertaken in response to a Thunderbird survey earlier this year that indicated some dissatisfaction with the existing system. Experiencing the greatest change, the sundry area fills a larger portion of the new store. Ohms said studies show many campus bookstores are adapting to include convenience store items. "In our own state, BYU and Utah State University have convenience stores as a retail operation. That seems to be somewhat of a trend.'' He said the new Bookstore was designed along these lines. It includes a complete supply of chips, soft drinks, bulk candy, and fresh baked items. "It what the students want," he said. "Anything from pickles to peanut butter." Other items include fruit and vegetable juices and frozen confectionary ice cream. Ohms said all items are available at prices comparable to other convenience stores in the community. The new store emphasizes convenience. Ohms said the facility js designed to offer quick, accessible service to students on the run. "We're not going to compete against the food service," he said. "This is for those people who want convenience-typ- e things." The new Bookstore also offers a greater supply of general interest books and paperbacks. Ohms said many of the paperbacks emphasize academic related works. However, he said retailing the classics poses a problem because they are readily available in most libraries. Books included on various bestseller lists continue to be available. Ohms said books on cassette tape, while currently not available, may be sold later at the new store. The new store also provides a larger selection of stationery and school supplies. "We will be filling the gaps," he said. The store now includes a complete selection of notebooks and folders. The amount of art and engineering supplies expanded to include many items which were not will be previously available. Ohms said improved item organization will let students see at a glance what is available. He adds that students will find a new line of art prints and a greater selection of greeting cards and posters. Ohms said business hours may expand once the Bookstore settles in at the new facility and it observes a need to sewe a greater amount of student traffic. The Bookstore is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays, and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. The added space and organization should decrease the chaos experienced during the first days of each quarter, said Ohms. Several new cash registers make the beginning days of each quarter less hectic. "We will have the ability to eventually go to eight cash registers if we need to," he said. Two cash registers will be open at all times, decreasing checkout time by half. The new Bookstore will continue its policy of accepting personal checks. That policy and the proximity of a First Security automatic teller machine just outside the new Bookstore should make all items accessible to students. The cash machine accepts several other bank cards on the Plus system along with the First Security card. For students who wish to sell back their old texts at the end of the quarter, a buy-bac- k window is located down the main hallway from the Bookstore entrance.
