Show THE THUNDERBIRD MONDAY College stocks affected by recent crash BY JULIE percent of the college's total investments." Southwick also said, "The stock market really has no direct impact on the college because the dividend yield hasn't been affected." "All we lost was the paper gain that we had on the books," said Southwick. SUSC's biggest loss was just on paper, about 30 percent of profits. Paper profits do not affect the yield. The stocks cannot be cashed in until 1998, a stipulation of American Stores Company donation agreement, according to Southwick. SUSC's other significant stocks include Southern Company, Utah Power and Light Company, American Electric Power Company, Exxon Corp. and General Electric. According to Southwick, the bulk of investments is in Cash Management Funds which account for 95.4 percent, endowment funds account for 1.9 percent, U.S. Treasury Bills account for 1.7 percent, and Notes Receivable account for 1 percent. "There was really nothing that we could do as far as protecting ourselves," Southwick said. "Certainly, we had a lot of people concerned," said Southwick. "They were checking to see if there was any impact on us, but, according to Southwick, right now there is not a significant impact on SUSC." COOK SUSC had some stocks involved in the recent stock market chaos. "Fortunately, there was very little effect on the college," said Paul Southwick, executive vice president for financial affairs. According to Southwick, SUSC has investments in stocks, but these stocks are primarily in endowment funds. The stocks were given to SUSC by donors. SUSC's largest holding is in American Stores Company which was given to the college by the Skaggs Company, specifically to fund scholarships. The American Stores Company stock is a restricted stock; therefore, the college cannot dispose of the stock until after 1998. Monday, Oct. 19, known as the Monday Massacre, was the largest single drop since 1929. The Dow Jones average plunged more than 500 points in that single day. Southwick said, "It (the stock market) has been up and down, each day, for the last week. Hopefully it's stabilizing, but no one knows for sure. "Overall, the market drop just has had no measurable impact on our income," said Southwick. "The impact was only on the endowment fund, which accounts for about two yo-yoi- TENNEY Stacey Buchanan.
