In the 'Birds' only road game thusfar, against Weber State, before a crowd of ranked SUSC 11,000 at Ogden, then-16t- h committed numerous mistakes in route to a 36-2- 6 loss. The 'Birds gave up two fumbles and two interceptions in the loss to the Wildcats. With the four turnovers aside, however, the Thunderbirds outplayed the Wildcats defensively and offensively but could not put enough points on the COTTAM With the Western Football Conference pundits scratching their chins in judgment, the SUSC football team has begun its 1987 season with a determination to establish itself as one of the loop's dominant powers. Coming off an 3 season last year, the led by Head Coach Jack Bishop, went in their first three games and have been 1 ranked in the NCAA Division II top 20 already this season. Before a huge crowd at Thunderbird Stadium, the 'Birds opened the year in win over Fort impressive fashion with a 38-2- 0 Lewis, Sept. 5. SEAFOOD PuJ.W.iV slvo;? kJ Golfers stay consistent BY JAY HINTON With four returning lettermen and a host of solid freshmen entering the program, the SUSC golf program is on the upswing. ''Golf is based on two things, consistency and improvement," commented coach Tom Kingsford. "Lettermen are our strength, but we need help from the freshmen." Senior letterman Brett Wilkinson, sophomore letterman Todd Mills and junior letterman Ryan Huntington will provide the firepower for the while incoming freshman Gary Cooper will be relied on very heavily to make the 'Birds competitive this fall. "With one junior and mostly freshmen from last season, the experience they gained should make us better," Kingsford said. The team participated in the Ft. Lewis Intercollegiate Golf Tournament in Durango this past weekend and placed fifth out of 10 teams. SUSC turned in a 605 score, while first place Ft. Lewis came in at 583. Scores after two days for SUSC were Wilkinson with 147, Will Healy at 151, Todd Mills at 152, Brandon Long with 155 and Huntington at 161. The medalist was Scott Field with a score of 135. The team started out well by tying for second place on the first day. On the second day, the team dropped to fifth place. Kingsford said, "the team just couldn't keep the lead they had on the first day." 30-ho- le The competed in the Wyoming Invitational Golf Tournament eairlier this month. In two rounds of action, they posted a fifth place score of 616, two strokes better than sixth place Adams State and three strokes behind fourth Air Force. Overall the team did well with Mills shoting a pair of 76's for a team high 152. Healy was one stroke behind Mills with rounds of 9 and a 153 score. Wilkinson posted a 155, while Huntington and Cooper shot a 156 and 160 74-7- respectively. fr 1 --r- vr m-- ' !, i . The future of the golf team is based on the strength of the golf program, and team average is essential for later playoft possibilities. "Golf is a team sport so all scores count, there a stong possibility of us making it to the playoffs if we score well in the bigger tournaments," Kingsford said.
