Show THE THUNDERBIRD No ready solutions for lack of day-car- e BY VERONICA TENNEY has been an issue Day-car- e at SUSC for roughly 10 years now, according to Betty Kingsford, associate vice president for student services. About two years ago, a study was done assessing the need for a day-car- e facility on the The study made it campus. clear that a day-car- e center would make life easier and give peace of mind to parents for who want quality day-car- e their children. As of now, there is no daycare available on campus for students, faculty, or community members. Student day-car- e options became a larger problem when one of the two privately owned Cedar City day-car- e centers closed down last spring and left about 50 parents in the lurch, said Bonnie Bishop, a professor with the home economics department. According to Bishop, many turned to unlicensed and inexperienced child care facilities or worse, leave their children unattended completely. Some are unable New and returning students will experience the unpleasant reality of paying 10 percent more in tuition fees. These increases are not at SUSC alone, but are being enacted across the state. However, in relation to the other colleges in the state, SUSC is still considerably lower in costs. This according to Mark Barton, director of admissions. The reason for the increase is the state's inability to keep up with the additional funding requirements of state colleges due to the increase in students. Here, enrollment is up by 12 percent and the bulk of new students are freshmen. SUSC will likely have a total of to attend college due to the fact that they cannot afford and have no private day-car- e children in their leave to way appropriate care. "They do need some kind of day-car- e situation," says Bishop. She adds, however, that budget cuts have made it next to impossible for a school-funde- d facility to be opened. Sterling Church, vice president for student services, is a agrees that while day-car- e priority, it would take "books out of the Library and professors out of the ON RECORDS AMD TAPES REMEMBER WE GIVE A 10 STORE MERCHANDISE TO! However, the issue of a state and school funded day-cacenter is "under review and study, but it will probably be several months before anything concrete is done," says Church. Church added that the problems are only exaggerated by the lack of funds caused by budget cuts that all Utah colleges and universities are feeling right now. As of now, nothing can be done to solve the problem, said Bishop. The only solution is for a parent to find their t I re own LOKL& 1,133 freshmen and 431 transfer students. In addition to returning students, there will be an estimated 3,000 enrolled at SUSC. Therefore, the college must raise the cost of tuition in order to maintain the quality of education that students receive. In refering to increases in tuition, Barton said that anytime there is a hike, it will effect the ability of some students to enter college. However, Barton pointed out that there is no other viable solution to funding problems at SUSC. On the good side is the fact that dormitory costs have been reduced $50 to $1,995 a year for the dorm and regular ineal ticket.
