Show The TfuuutiTbinf Morufuv ApriC 28, 1986 Bowns appointed to Public Lands Council Utahn James Bowns has been term appointed to a three-yea- r on the National Public Lands Advisory Council by- Secretary of the Interior Don Hodel. Bowns, a professor of range science at SUSC and Utah State University, will serve on the council through Dec. 31, 1988. He and six other new appointees will participate in May 14 through 16 meetings in Casper and Gillette, Wy. Bowns said the council gathers and analyzes information, makes studies, and hears public testimony in order to offer advice and develop recommendations from a national, public interest perspective. Bowns was appointed to the Interior Departments Animal Damage Control- Policy Advisory Committee in 1978 as a result of his extensive research on coyote depredation on sheep and cattle. The committee was appointed by then Secretary of the Interior Cecil Andrus as an advisory group for the development of the document Predator Damage in the West, a Study of Coyote - Management Alternatives, was (LET DM PLGraduating Seniors the basis for the environmental impact statement prepared by the Interior and released in 1979. The SUSCUSU faculty member was also appointed to the Council for Agricultural Science and Technology (CAST) Task Force on Sheep and Goats. He also testified at 1982 government hearings in regard to reregistration of Compound 1080 for predator control. In addition, Bowns has served as president of the Utah Section of the Society for Range Management, and twice as chairman of the WRCC-2Western Regional Comittee to evaluate the management of predators in relation to domestic animals. Bowns has been honored for his work as a range scientist and predator control expert. He is the recipient of the Camptender Award from the National Wool Growers Association and the Special Service to Agriculture Award from the Texas Chapter of The Wildlife Society for a Texas A&.M bulletin he on predator evidence.
