Politics.. .theres really never been anything thats pushed me toward it, he says, but theres always been something in the back of my mind. Ever since I a law Cooking, water skiing and basketball are among Harveys outside interests. was a little kid, I told people I would be a U.S. senator someday. Harvey spent last fall as an intern with Rep. Jim Hansen. He says it was an incredible experience. ..to see the workings of the political machine in Wahington, D.C. In what he might loosely call his spare time, Harvey keeps in shape bv water skiing and playing basketball. He also likes to cook. Its not anything gourmet, he says, but its certainly edible. Is there one thing he would like to accomplish while hes at SUSC? It wouldnt be tangible, he replies. The one thing Id like to achiev is to represent SUSC in a manner that other people can look at the students at SUSC and say thats a place I would like to send my kids. If his record is any indication, Harveys future is bright. His competition better start running now, though, or all theyll catch is his shadow. Tuesday Nintimficr 12 , 1985 The Publications Council is now accepting applications for student members The Council is responsible for the selection of editors, approval of budgets and the hearing of complaints for student publications such as The Thunderbird. The Council meets an average of once per quarter and members may be drawn from all corners of the student body. Ineligible for membership are Executive Council members, Senators, and staff members of student publications. are available from Barbara Morgan, third floor Administration Building, and are due back no later than 5 p.m., Monday, Mov. 18, 1985. Applications Computer use on rise here (continued from page 7) predicts that while the nature of courses will change as students come to SUSC with a more sophisticated background in computers, the subject is here to stay. While the academic end of SUSCs computer usage originates with the academic schools, the heart of the operation is housed in the SUSC Computer Center located in the science building. Chandler Whitelaw is the center director. He left a position at the State of Utah Computer Center to join the SUSC staff in 1982. When Whitelaw arrived at SUSC, there were about 30 terminals and only a few microcomputers on campus, and the extensive networking system that now connects the terminals and mainframe computers was yet in its early stages. SUSCs networking system is Whitelaws pride and joy. Not only are the terminals and most of the microcomputers connected to the colleges mainframe Digital 2020 and VAX 11750 computers, but the college has connections with the Weber State Computer System as well. Provost Alger notes that while SUSC is weaning itself from the WSC system, its the only college in Utah to have its entire campus internally networked and able to tap into PORTSMEN'S rX 1 another system as well. He admits though, that this effort has somewhat shortened SUSC in other equipment purchases, and that the college will be attempting to recover lost ground in those areas. The 2020 was installed in the fall of 1982. It is the colleges main academic computer for what Whitelaw calls secondary administration. Faculty, staff and students do everything on this computer, from C.S. classes to word processing, statistical and data base packages and the production of mailing labels. SUSCs central administration is carried out on the VAX 11750 which was installed last fall. Everything from the college payroll to registration and admissions, financial aids, accounts receivable and internal accounting goes through this e system. Whitelaw indicates that purchasing and alumni development will be installed on the VAX in the coming months. Loan collections and inventory are still run longdistance through WSC, but will eventually stay on campus, Whitelaw adds. 64-lin- Wednesday (Ladies Friday Saturday PlrTUPl 900 SOUTH MAIN STREET CEDAR CITY D PERSONAL PAN PIZZA Justice Band Sandwiches.
