When a new culture has completely different traditions and values from that of their own, the process can be even more striking. Center when they first arrive. The center, under the direction of Bonnie Mitchell, provides personal, academic, financial and career counseling to minority students at the college. All minorities on the campus pretty much share the same problem: its the fact that you are a minority and its noticed, said Mark Frazier, president of the Black Student Union. The Center is someplace where you can come and get help knowing that somebody else has the same problem that you do, he added. An intensive academic preparation and orientation program is offered prior to each Fall quarter for incoming minority and international students. The students are led down the road to making a smooth transition from their own culture to the college life. They are encouraged to take their newly learned skills and utilize them for the academic support services available on campus. Frazier attributes some of the problems they face to a lack of understanding about their cultures and traditions. Most of the problems you face are from peers.
