Peanuic are for kids BY JANET CRAWFORD When you hear Peanut Butter Players, you may be a little curious about the name. The Peanut Butter Players are a special theatre group performing for the child in all of us, says Sandra Stiglinski, director of the group. And (the group) appeals to people of all ages. The group performs mostly from literary works and old fairy tales, but also accepts literature offered by others. This year, the group will be performing Androcles and the Lion, along with a collection of poems from Shel Silversteins A Light in the Attic. The show is designed for both children and adults. The players will be performing at elementary schools in the area, and will travel to Salt Lake City in the spring, says Stiglinski. The main purpose of the group is to work directly with the schools. They hope to work with educators, help with curriculum through acting and use materials written by children. Stiglinski said there are eight core members in the group: Daniel McVey, Tiya E. Coleman, Gary Owen, Trudi Fagg, Jennifer Rothey, Jean Wiser and Robbie Young. I think its beneficial, says Elizabeth Leisek. As performers we discover insight that the worlds greatest playwrights couldnt write or identify. She also says that performing with the group is a fun way to release tension. The cast can range from five to 25 actors and actresses, depending on the show and the companys personal schedules. Special qualities these actors need to have are a willingness to share and an ability to explore their own facilities and imaginations, said Stiglinski. She says these qualities come through work and willingness. Some of the main goals for this group are to give actors a chance to work on technique and to build confidence and imagination, she says. Play is Greek to some (continued from page 8) Clytemnestra is the pivotal character of the play. She answers to the chorus, she speaks of justice for a murdered child, and she carries out the execution. This is perhaps the most complicated role in the play. Burnhardts adaptation was excellent, for the most part. The falsetto usually worked, but unfortunately was never convincing. Looking beyond that, however, is where the true character came out. Burnhardts Clytemnestra was portrayed as a mother trying for some justice for women and especially for what she saw as her daughters unjustified death. Also, Clytemnestra was not as dependent on the bad hand gestures as some of the others, but even so, hers were still overdone. The hatred for her husband was plain, though. His performance was the best in the play. One of my major complaints about this production is the extreme overuse of useless gestures from the ancient Greek plays. Today we have motivation and character; in 450 B.C. they dealt with stock characters and certain gestures for certain meanings. Holt not only went for the feel and traditions of ancient Greek plays, but also some of their mistakes.
