As student leaders we wish to thank you for the support you have demonstrated at the activities that we have sponsored thus far. Your enthusiasm gives us great confidence as we continue to plan our upcoming activities and programs. am personally excited about many of the goals that were accomplished over the summer and many of the visions of last spring which hve become reality. The new student internship program established spring quarter is now in full force. Along with preparation tapes for many of the graduate tests. Both of these programs are offered in the Student Service Center. Also, new electronic signs and dance banners were purchased to heighten even more our push for effective promotions. As you know, the new Student Service Center opened last week. This center, with the many services it renders, will be perhaps the single greatest contribution this student government administration can make to students. The center will most likely affect everyone whether it be through the legal service, book exchange, barter system or some other function. This center will be a great and much needed aid to all students. Another aim this year has been to sponsor a unique variety of dances and other activities that would make this year an exciting time for everyone. The idea of Student Center Nights twice a month with movies, comedy, free food, etc..., has already been started with tremendous success. Also, the dances put on by the clubs have been given themes, and student government assists them with money for decorations and refreshments. think you will notice that there will be many new and fun activities form dating games to lip synch competitions to trivia bowls that will entice everyone to get involved somehow. The goal of this student administration is not just to enhance social programming, but to go beyond that and increase academic assistance while you are here at college and develop internship experience and career opportunities for when you depart from SUSC. When these objectives are met you can be assured that your stay here at SUSC will have been enjoyable as well as fulfilling. 85 ASSUSe Executive Council Office Hours Alan Bailey Administrative MTWF; 2 to 5 TH; 2 to 4 Kirk Bowden V.P. According to Student Affairs Director Mark Morman, Ombudsman means citizens protector. was first established in Sweden as a goverment agency responsible for hearing the complaints and grievances of the citizens. The idea of having an ombudsman spread to many national governments, and in 1966 the first ombudsman was established on an American It in 1809 campus. Today there are hundreds ombudsmen across the country, and this will be the first ever ombudsman service for the SUSC campus. The SUSC Office of the Ombudsman functions as center for complaints, problems, or suggestions from the student community. Legal referral service is also available form local Cedar City attorneys. If you have a problem, let us help you. Why is this year so hot you ask? For starters, Jean Wiser has set her expectations higher than ever before, where the clubs and organizations are concerned. And they are beginning to develop even bigger than what she had planned. Having just finished with a Club Presidents Leadership Conference, where club leaders met together to get acquainted and learn new leadership skills, we see club presidents ready to become a more prominent part of SUSCs activities. For example, two thirds of all the clubs on campus have already promised to enter quality exhibits in the upcoming Homecoming Parade. Through Wisers direction, a new club, a pep club, was formed just last week, and is already on a -- o. regg Russell m A Is- - 4,', i 'i its at Through a new point system, clubs will be competing for awards according to their participation at all activities. These awards are given quarterly and are cash awards and are extremely motivating for the club members. It makes them have something to look forward to, something to work for rather than just a pat on the back, says Wiser as she looks at her watch. Whether on the phone at her desk, or running around campus, Wiser has really made great leaps for clubs and organizations. On a final note, as Jean runs out the door, she turns and says Clubs are where its at. Just look around and youll begin to see just how big they are becoming this year is hot! by Jeff Swindlehurst, ASSUSC United Arts Director Duceirii good singer who is very funny or a very funny guy who sings well Friday, Oct. 25th, 8 p.m., Auditorium $4 for students, $5 general admission Tickets available at SUSC Box Office, Munsons Music World, and Radio Shack |
