Pool open for students BY ROBBIE REID FAM BID UDENT TAKE HEED Thursday, after being closed down for 10 months, the college swimming pool was repaired and reopened. The cost of repairs was between $60,000 and $70,000. Problems first started when a large crack was discovered in the deep end of the pool. We first noticed the crack during the Christmas holidays. The pool was losing three inches of water a day, and (the loss) was inci easing, said Gordon Slack, director of SUSC Plant Operations. Holes wexc drilled around the pool and filled with grout (cement). About 100 yards of grout was used, said Slack. This brought the pool bark to where it shifted, but complications set in. More ciacks occurred m the pool. The plaster was about 10 to 12 years old, so that presented another problem, said Slack. After scraping the pool completely, it was replastered. The pool was filled, but it was still leaking. Also, the force of moving the pool back into place caused a pipe to break. The pipe was replaced, but it was found that the water was leaking through the drain system. A company from St. George was called in to devise a plan of plastic hose into a running a pipe. The drains were redone, and again the problem was solved. Semester system studied (continued from page 1) Sixty-fou- r percent of the colleges and universities nationwide are on a semester schedule. If SUSC switched, students wouldnt have the problems they have now when transferring. Moreover, students would be purchasing fewer textbooks. The majority of the texts written are for the longer semester, so students would have the chance to gain more of an understanding from their texts. The time spent with registration and advisement would be substantially reduced, as well. Also students and teachers could reduce their stress levels by having only two grading cycles per year rather than three. The quarter system has its advantages too, those same officials say. With three fresh starts, there are three chances to do better and less chance of boredom and burnout. Students receive grades three times a year. Frequent evaluations of their academic progress will promote learning, some say. Theres always a little nervousness and inertia in people wanting to change, said Alger. According to Alger, what the students and faculty do and say will have a definite impact on what the board of regents decides. This is one in which the regent will be waiting to hear what the people are going to say, said Alger. officials say. COUPON JUMBO BURGER REG.
