This is one of the better tournaments for the fall, Kingsford said. This is by far, on paper, the strongest team we have had in years, he added about his squad. The Thunderbirds will return four members from last years Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference championship team. Among the members will be scholastic and RMAC medalist Stuart Adams. Another of the returning players will be letterman Kris Abegglin. Abbeglin, according to Kingsford, has improved his game considerably over the summer. I expect both Stuart and Kris to be high in the medalist rankings, Kingsford predicted. Runners tuning up One Steak and Shrimp One of the youngest, yet most potential, cross country teams in several years is tuning up at Southern Utah State, and expectations are riding high. Early cross country meets, like this Saturdays meet at Weber State, should help this years running squad tune up for the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference championships in November. According to Coach Ben Davidson the success of the team may hinge on the youth of the team. If the young kids can come along, well be better than last year. Were looking for individual improvements each week as we face tougher and tougher competition, Davidson said. Last week the tough competition was in the form of the Northern Arizona University Invitational. Top runner for the Thunderbirds was senior Robert Naylor who cruised the five mile course in 27:16, finishing 37th in a field of 106 runners. Naylor was followed by Tim Pilling, a transfer student, and veteran Thunderbird runner John Pragle. The youth among the squad members are runners Chris Davis and Scott Mason. If they come along then we could give the other teams a push. Davidson figures if they do come along and combine with the other members then the Birds will be one of the top two teams in the Conference. The goal of the team is to win both conference and district, Kingsford said. Last season the achieved the first leg of this goal but suffered through a disappointing district tournament. The Thunderbirds finished in fourth place in the District 7 championships but were a scant four strokes behind the top finisher. There are so many untangible things in golf, the consistency factor is much higher, Kingsford alluded. One of the many things that people dont realize is that collegiate golf is a team sport. The toughest thing is to materialize a team instead of the individual, the golf coach said. Individual scores are combined for a team score. Kingsford is nonetheless looking forward to an excellent season. 1 One coupon per table Expires Dec. 31, 1984 Veteran runner John Pragle will add experience to a young Thunderbird cross country team. 1 Glamour-Am- a Roberta Peters "Carol McBride Tony Nielsen 36 West College Ave 586-020- 4 - COLLEGE AVE.
