Show OUR OGDEN LETTER OGDEN CITY utah july loth 1886 editor deseret bews aeto at 10 this morning the Dr DISTRICT STRICT COURT CO was opened in the usual manner the court room wits was crowded with spectators cudse zare zape prosecuting attorney dickson and others irom from salt lake were ere in attendance the bar was well represented by legal luminaries the reading of the fhe minutes of the previous aro proceedings ce edings occupied considerable lime and were signed by his honor 0 W powers lie he liethen then made boade an order that hon C S zane chief justice of the supreme court of utah preside his honor then called the case of the PEOPLE VS A C GREENWELL mr kimball of counsel for the defense stated that defendant was sick he was too ill III to be in attendance this morning dr 0 3 13 adams was sworn and testified that mr greenwell was wag too indisposed to be present today to day counsel also stated that dr A S cindon would corroborate the statement ot of dr adams the consideration of this case was then postponed until next tuesday morning at 10 the witnesses were excused till that day this was a great disappointment to the large audience who had ad assembled in anticipation of a sensational feast the disease with which is afflicted is THE A AZURE Z URE DEMONS super induced by too daely freely imbibing intoxicants his counsel I 1 am informed cautioned their client specially to abstain from drinking and to be sober on this occasion alter after the above announcement the court adjourned till 12 p ra m nothing nettling 0 of f importance or of interest was done in in the court after the postponement pon ement of the Green greenwell viell case except the issuing of an order for an open venire for foi thirty persons from whom to select a petit j jury ury on tuesday next the officers were also to inform the persons sumiko summoned ned that if after they are summoned they talk about this case and it comes to the knowledge of the court they will be punished for contempt this evening the regular monthly m meeting of the UNION of the weber stake was held in the second wara house there was wasa a good attendance on the occasion the proceedings were called to order by sapt K R ballantyne the second ward furnished thet choir music the th exercises were opened by y our Mounta iii home so dear prayer was offered by oy elder B R dye which was followed by singing around the throne of god superintendent tillotson delivered an address in which he gave air an historical SKETCH ot the sunday schools in utah ile he referred to the very small beginning of 0 this excellent and ana important institution and traced the progress from that time until it has reached its present matu mammoth moth proportions and emoke at some seme length of the influence that it now wields for the good and elevating of the youth of this community front a few members in an isolated place it has extended to all the wards and settlements tle ments in these valleys and its numerical strength is about pupils and teachers and officers making about in all and which number is STILL increasing as time rolls on notwithstanding the exertions of our enemies to prevent its growth the sketch was followed by songs and appropriate addresses by suits A C brown and B R ballantyne and closed by the choir singing when shall we meet thee bupt supt peter later pronounced the benediction it is both pleasing and cause for much mach gratitude to witness the growth ot of the sunday schools among this people and the care and solicitude with w which eh they are fostered by the stake and ward authorities who show an ever ready willingness to sustain aid strengthen the hands bands of f those who have charge of these anese home institutions THE HOME missionaries also take much pleasure in visiting these schools reever their appointments may be on the sabbath day and speaking a word ot of encouragement to the teachers and pupils and to assist by such suggestions r as they may be led to offer in impressing on the minds of the children the importance of acquin ing a knowledge of the word and weik of god that as they increase in years they may become be comewell weil grounded in fu the truths of the scriptures s crip tures obedience to which will m make ke them 66 wise unto salvation god bless our sunday sanday schools WEBER |
