Show Fire Crews Wait For Fall Rains GLENDALE, Calif. (UP!) The Tujunga Canyon area in the mountains rimming Los Angeles last burned in 1939, and the fires were followed on New Years day by rains and floods that killed 30 persons. d The canyons and hillsides burned again this week, with 66,000 acres charred and 43 homes damaged or destroyed in the two blazes. Officials are already preparing to fight the rains and floods that will come this winter. Gentle rains Thanksgiving Day helped firemen contain the flames within fire breaks encompassing 100 square miles, and on Friday they worked to quench the remaining hot spots in the big Tujunga fire and the smaller Mt. Baldy blaze 30 miles to the east. At the same time, authorities laid plans for a massive reseeding effort they hope can hold back as much soil as possible and lessen flood damage from the coming winter rains. Ground crews were scheduled to start Saturday g wheat grass seeds on lines sowing used by fire crews fighting the blaze. This isn't going to stop the flooding, but it might hold down some soil, a forest service spokesman said. "If it helps, its better than nothing. But realistically, it wont stop the flooding." Early next month crews in helicopters and fixed-win- g aircraft will sow rye grass on the denuded slopes above residential areas. Other crews will go back over the firelines and dig ditches that might divert some runoff water into unburned sections. They will also plant salt brush in areas frequented by animals. By Dave Citizen Smith Gerard Jurors SACRAMENTO, Calif. (UPI) who found Lynette Fromme guilty of attempting to assassinate President Ford refused to disclose Friday whether their silence about how the verdict was reached was prompted by fear of retribution. Reached by telephone, some members of the jury that convicted the Manson cultist refused to discuss the case, but said remaining silent was an individual decision.
