evening news hews As numerous inquiries contin continue tro tre to come to us from people living in utah c concerning ning this countr country yi and the prospects and facilities for get et here the nature of tha the eoll the climate the water etc we have thought proper to forward for publication another brief account of this part of the count country rys where there are now some 30 families of our people located in a former communication to the NEWS a few months ago wo we a answered anaw n a w ered ored all of tho the above inquiries a aa far as w we a could at the time but aa as t the tho h a ve very v bamo earno quest questions folls folis have been asked ua us repeatedly bince since we will answer some of them again and will say that thena the nature of the soll in this great sin louis louls valley ia is generally rather gravelly and mostly covered with grea greasewood greaso grease sawood wood and rabbit brush A great portion of cf the land is undulated and somewhat uneven it has very little falland fall fail and to the naked eya looks like a perfect level yet it slopes enough to the north and east to irrigate and for that purpose the water ia is easily taken out of the rivers which are very shallow the water running in places nearly on the surface of the gro ground aund small grain seems to do well here and we think the hardier kinds of fruit and vegetables can be successfully grown the spring and summer so far have been q quite 1 tilte cold and very windy but behave we have had some rain an and d the grain grainy though put in laptef late is looking well j A num berof our men are engaged on the tha saw baw mill in III the conejos canon some fifteen miles away where they are working for lumber and timber to build their thel r houses Lumber sells at the mill rqn far from sa 6 to 15 per 1000 feet timber la is plentiful on the surround ing mountains which are aie quite low and easy of access the land we are on belonga to ta the state of colorado having been donated by the general gover government rim 0 nt for schools universities and ot other her hen purposes but it can be bought from the and we some time ago made application to purchase about aboul 2000 acres for the people of this place and men have been appointed to appraise the land which duty they have not yet atte attended to we are however assur red that the land will not cost coat more than government price 1 an acre and we hope to get it for less term ot qt payment as prescribed by law are 30 per cent down at time of saie sale and balance in beven equal annual payments bearing seven per cent interest till paid water for irrigation is plentiful and here at manassa we have a fine meadow of nearly aeres acres close to toWn About three fourths of the city lots are now claimed and all of the best land nearest to town we have just completed the location and survey of ai nother another townsite which we have named ephraim it ia is 31 3 miles northeast of manasa manassa the townsite ia is one mile north and south bouth by one halt half mile east ast and west is laid off in 32 blocks four lots jots to each block streets six rods wide we have also surveyed and laid onn off in 10 acre iota lota about 1000 acres of land close around the town and have located and levelled bevelled level led a ditch from the conejos river to the townsite it is 13 only one mile anda a quarter long having a fall oi ot six feet to the mile I 1 and is passing over onen oven ground where it Is easily Iseah lly liy constructed there is a good range to the east on the west bank of the conejos river biver where there also aho are nice cottonwood groves to shade the stock in the summer the nearest good meadow land to ephraim however id Is on the lajara la lua jara jarm creek bome some six or seven miles away but then there is plenty ot of it there ia is also a great deal moro mere farming land in tho the vicinity of ephraim that can ba be located when wanted we think the facilities there are to sustain from to families all our locations hero have been been done in conformity to the government i sui bui surveys veyo the lines and corners of which we have diligently traced and followed and having now completed the survey of the country as far as we at present deem necessary brother john H hougaard Ho agaard our Burve surveyor yon has been released to return home
