Show correspondence heue TO SAN JUAN CITY san juan Cou county lity utah december 8 1885 11 editor deseret netos we arrived here oil on the foth ith dinst just at dusk and found the good people of bluff all well I 1 and very vety much rejoiced tose to see sec eus cus us our journey during the last few days was A very very aery ery haril hard on our teams much of the road was sundy sandy sandland sand yand and our grain for teams began to ba be short but we came camf in in good shape all 0 of the company feeling well the country from Orang orangeville eville castle valley is not of much account unless it be to hold the earth together the hills and valleys are bare and almost free from any covering except rock and a good for nothing clay there is a stretch of country between wilson ville on cottonwood creek ant and the first holes in rocks which I 1 is 8 a beautiful bench of good sandy loam covered with fine line grass rass liete is A fine FINK prospect FOR DRY bry FARMING we met two brethren who had been out putting in some wheat as an experiment from this place the whole face of the country has but one appearance ap ea rance and that is desert and arid tilt green river is reached the road for miles runs along and on top of the grade which the D R G ry ity company put up before they decided to run lown iown down spanish fork canon calion making a 11 first class road AT grees GREEN kivela there can be made some fine une farms and orchards the soil is excellent and climate un unsurpassed ed a few have raised water from the liver by the wheel process and produced excellent crops of corn and some vegetables which are almost as fine as I 1 ever saw brother job smith had just completed a machine for raisin raising the water from the river to the east bank some 26 fe feet t for brother packard formerly I 1 of brigham city at a cost of about it will water 80 acres of land there is still some land to be had bad and any amount of water in the river still a here I 1 met mine host major 11 II M beardsley keeping the hotel of this pice lie ile and ana his lovely wife seemed to be happy it in their new home and the I 1 malor major was busy as usual in making improvements both useful and ornamental ile he told me that the D K R G railway company were heart and hand band with him im in improving the surroundings roun dings of the hotel which when completed will make a fine floe winter resort for the invalid who may be seeking ine lne a mild winter climate the road from green to little grande section house 16 miles is very fair some sand for the mile or two but after that the road is good some leed feed is found on the east bank of the river but none on the west we used the ferry in cross ine ins not deeming the ford safe for tea teams sand saud and aud wagons cattle ford bel bei below ow the railroad bridge safely from little grande to court house spring springs s a distance of 20 miles the road is quite fair being mostly over rollin rolling lay clay glay hills and valleys with no food to speak of near the line of travel at wash two miles from the section house water far animals can be found at court house springs good feed and water are found thence to grande river 15 miles the road is down grade rocky and sandy and the feed freedgood fee dood good we found more water running down the river than there is in green river we crossed the river and rolled on about tw and came to MOAB a nice little town situated in little grande valley tho residents have raised very fair crops here the past season some of the best corn has been raised here liere that I 1 ever saw of the missouri river also excellent sorghum and some of the finest ap ples pies raised by brother warner of this place lace he also informed me that he iad ead had quite a crop of very tine fine pears and grapes of which he has a nice variety 1 I could not see anything to hinder the people here from makin making themselves comfortable homes in a very short time with labor and perseverance the climate and soil is all that can be asked the upper part of the valley l about six miles from moab Is destined to become a very nue hue pla pia plade place d in the near hear future they have a line tract of rich land and plenty of water for lor it as I 1 was waa informed this beautiful little valley contains about sow som acres of land laud and a fine floe site for a town near toe the centre the soil a rich sandy loam well adapted to the culture of fruit and vines vinea of all kinds there is 19 plenty of timber in the lasalle mountains about fifteen miles distant to the east with a very fair r ad already opened to it bi others and warner have a small saw mili mill and chopper in operation and think of movin morin the saw taw saw mill up nearer the timber idere hen nen is one of the finest locations for 00 50 families of moderate means that I 1 know of so near salt lake city only about 40 miles from the line ot of the 1 D R G rall railway at thomson springs I 1 do hope some twenty young married men will see it to advantage to move in there this winter and be ready to raie rale a crop there ther e ne next at summer some ionic five families who are there noty noly moved in a year ago last august alst almost destitute but now they thet are comparatively comfortable having havila raised a lair crop and all have comfortable log cabins to live in this also is a tine fine country for there being no necee necessity sity to provide feed for them during the winter bishop randolph stewart presides here and is ably assisted by brothers burnham and holyoake and the whole ward now appears to be in a good healthy condition I 1 anden a fair way to prosperity the effect of the late visit of apostle F V blyman M lyman and counselor seely of emery stake Is quite apparent they did much good rood and the people feel renewed ancl and strengthened in their faith may they ever abide in theeo the counsel they received during the visit of these brethren I 1 THE ROAD to the blue dlou blou mountains obatris is not as good as it ought to be to encourage emigration to gan juan hocks rocks and sand would describe the major part of it we found no trouble as to water for lor ourselves or animals and feed also was tolerable good the road passes over a grand winter range for stock in summer the animals feed on the lasalle and blue bluel mountains and in winter on these extensive mesas or low plains at cain springs we had one wa wagon 0 n turn over into a deepcut deep cut thel the late a te rain had bad made the bank give way and the wagon rolled over and lodged in a fine line bed of goft mud and abou abo tone uVone foot ot of water breaking one wagon agon bow bov and two glass jars filled with peach preserves damage about A brother wilson from moab in company with some two or three other brethren happened to be here on a hunting bunting tour and came to the rescue the they jumped lumped into the mud and water and worked like beavers till the whole matter was set right and before dark we rolled into caulp camp feeling first rate from cain springs to the foot of the hill or hills oil on the way to peterson feterson ranch rauch at th the e no northern r the r n base of the blue mountains the road Is tolerably fa fair I 1 r till these hills are reached then it Is up hill business indeed for some three miles loaded teams need to doable we were from early morning till thi one p in making these three miles A dugway dug way can bu be made that will en obviate this bad piece of road from this place to south montezuma the road feed and water gater are good and for twenty miles the traveler passes passe over one oneff of the finest grazing countries I 1 ever saw from south montezuma the road is up grade for six miles to devil callon canon still passing over a nine fine range for stock and here we reached the summit of the highest pointon the road to bluff city we passed over a little snow for about half a mile and then commenced down graditor gra detor forty miles to bluff city on the san juan river nearly the whole distance it is a fine winter range for stock on the summit we pass passed ad for three or four miles ahr through ough g allne aline a nine fine belt of coed d saw timber five thousand dollars ollars would 1 it if properly expended bet between here and moab a distance of miles make the road quite passable so that the good people of the north who might desire to come and see our oar tine fine cou country elry Eiry need not jeopardize their lives we hope the legi sture this winter will CONSIDER THIS ROAD MATTER and kindly remember the situation of of san juan county as regards roads and bridges A little assistance now will help the country to develop soon into a wealthy and populous country tor for no matter how ine ene alne a country we have if people from froin other parts cannot get wet et to it or the roads are so bad that thit we cannot get our products away to market the country cannot grow if san juan county can be nursed a little now she will soon be able to help herself and assist others through a rapid increase of her taxable property for lor she is rich in natural resources we want twenty young married men to assist in developing this part of utah also the same number cumber for burnham ward in new mexico fifteen families for la plata on the ilver kiver river la plata in new mexico also twenty families for mancos col SO 30 miles from derango col here are nine fine opportunities port unities ion jor the young to c come ome south and
