Show 0 B I 1 T TT A ja at benjamin franklin stewart olo dio was lil ili led by lightning at benjamin utah co U T june 2 eid ad was the fth child of Ph philanda ilande r B and sarah ssarah scott brewart bt ewart ile he was born october 1817 in jackson township monroe county ohio migrated to illinois with his fathers family when 11 years of age september ber her lith 1837 he married polly rison richard son and soon after moved into vanburen co state of lown iown when he received the gospel february 1 ll 11 44 and was the same day ordained an elder removed with w ith other exiles tolien to keg creek w was as ordained a seven seventy tut by president joseph young april ath 1817 soon after atter this latter event he started with the pioneers to hunt a refuge for tor the fleeing saints he was one of seven men left lett out of the pioneer company at plate plat piat c river in the midst of an indian country to ferry over the families of the saints who followed that season he ile arrived in salt lake city september 1847 and has ever since been an active laborer in in building up the zion of the lod lord in the tops of the mountains november 23 1849 he started iu company with apostle parley P pratt and about forty I 1 eight others with ox teams to explore tie the southern part of utah on this trip he necessarily encountered many handsh hardships Ps and privations but was never heard heird to coin plain in karch march 1851 1831 he removed to payson where be he made a permanent home and where he was recognized as a leading spirit religiously politically and temporarily in 1858 lie he was set apart as one oi of t the he seven presidents at of the quorum of Seventies which h position he occupied at the time of his death april he was set apart as second counselor to bishop john B fairbanks of pa rayson payson son ward which position he filled cred it I 1 until august 1871 when n hen a reorganization bation of the ward took place in conse delace quence of the absence of the e bishop on a mission to england at a municipal election held february 9 1863 brother stewart was elected mayor 0 of f payson city and served in that office for two terms of two years ears each in october 1869 he be was sent ona on a mission to the western states upon which he was wits a absent several months doing good service in 1862 he with his brother andrew jackson te and others laid the foundation for sor tora fora a town three miles north of payson which was named benjamin in his honor thus fu fulfilling hilling a prophecy that was made concerning him by patriarch john smith m when lien llen he gave him a patriarchal blessing in the year 1847 at this place lie he located his two wives all his sons gons and nearly all ail alchia his daughters and in 1871 he was w as appointed to preside over the branch thus built up mainly through his instrumentality this position position he also occupied at the time of his death th the funeral services ivere were conducted under the shade of a fine grove of trees that had been set out by brother own hands some years ago and were conducted b by bf bishop tanner of payson davson the pa bon akoi choir was present and led lea the singing the speakers speakers were elder henry hhenry G boyle isaiah M coombs and david lant the body was interred in the benjamin cemetery the site kor lor for which had been selected by brother stewart and was followed to its last resting place by a cortege of 63 62 wagons and carriages containing three or four hundred persons elsoos the grave grav ewas was dedicated by elder er Worsen crof crot t of payson parson 1 I M COOMBS territorial enquirer please copy cop |
