Show p PR R jf ACHING AT THE penitentiary MORMON ON ELDERS VISIT THE territorial PRISON AND nold SERVICES yesterday by courtesy and permission of the united states marshal mr dir ireland a number of members of the church of jesus christ of latter klatter day saints visited the penitentiary and held heid services within the walls of that institution it has been the cu custom 9 tom with ministers of the various sectarian churches to visit the place more or less regularly on sabbath davs days and preach to the inmates and atter alter the new rules went into eff effect act restal restricting cang the privileges of vis visitors tol 8 it w was way a S suggested ages ted that lat it wo would uld only be fair u for mormon elde eide elders eiders to have an equal chance with the tile ministers of other dem ded denominations nominations omi nations in holding services there theng bishop 0 F whitney was deputized to call upon the U S marshal and ascertain how bow he felt about the matter ile he was accompanied by city marshal was received with courtesy by mr ireland and the request made was cheerfully granted satisfactory arrangements were then made with mr air ilaff iliff the methodist minister and mr air putnam of the episcopal edi EvI church and others by which the first sunday in each eacil month was set apart for the use and accommodation of our elders pursuant to this arrangement bishop whitney bishop james C watson elder robert patrick brother joseph morgan and two ladies of the tabernacle choir made the first visit yesterday they were kindly received by mr dow the warden and his deputies and after being reminded that the rules of the prison would not allow them to converse conver ge with any of the inmates they were admitted within the double daubl gates es at the west end of the enclosure 0 traversing a portion of the yard they were ushered into the dining hall a ion lon low structure loz loy of logs aud and mud in ud nea neat and clean on the interior situated t to 0 th the e south of the sleeping il cells here he r e were w e re congregated all the in inmates mates of the penitentiary excepting one this was the murderer hopt who lay stretched out in the shade of the wall in the southwest south west corner of the yard flat upon his bis back bis hat over his face lace and either oblivious of his surroundings surroundings OF or surveying with moody gaze t the he dead linea within a few feet of him beyond which he is not perm permitted bitted to pass As the brethren and aad sisters took the seats beats prepared for fur them near a table at the east end of the hall they saw they were being surveyed with as muc much interest on the part of the assembly surrounding them as they in turn could not abt but feel for their observers nat hat a clay saints hymn book they were led by an of the institution our informant did not learn his name who accompanied on the organ which he plays very well after afier the tile singing neing sl and a prayer pra yerby by bishop watson the assembly was addressed for about thirty minutes by bishop whitney lie ile dwelt upon the universal fatherhood of gol god and brothel hood hoad of mankind cited title and scriptural evidences of the immortality ot the soul and exhorted to repentance and reformation and to aspirations af after ter a higher and a better life watson followed in an addres address of fifteen or twenty minutes in which he showed the destiny of the spirit after death and that of the earth after it should be sanctified he also counseled his hearers bearers to be obedient and respectful to the officers now over them and gain their confidence and good will by meritorious conduct elder robert patrick added a few words of personal experience la in accepting and preaching the gospel go S pel pei an and d of testimony as to the truth of what had been said the visiting choir then san sang a hymn and elder joseph joeph morgan pronounced the benediction the speakers enjoyed freedom and power and the spirit of god prevailed in the meeting mee mec ting at the close of the services the brethren were permitted to administer the sacrament to members of the church and sing a sacramental hymn after which the party nodded and waved their farewells passed out of the gates resumed their vehicles and having laving thanked the warden and his aids for r theli kindly treatment returning to the city the brethren who are confined it was plain to bo seen much enjoyed the visit with the privilege of partaking of the holy sacrament with members of their faith listening to their voices and little season upon faces which beamed with s sympathy and love for them under mader th the c trying circumstances in which they are placed |
