ala aiA authors hors and also upon various sub Bub su bjes jets to the columns of conr valuable and interesting paper and I 1 will with your permission put f forth orth a few reflections from the mind af a roaming liberal in the first place I 1 wife will say that I 1 have noticed many ye svery 5 many manx hard articles inserted in various public journals against your people theAlor the mormons cormons Mor mons I 1 mean chave t have thought it proper to gain an evidence regarding the truthfulness or untruthfulness of the reports against you by taking personal observations for myself I 1 havo nave mingled in the society ot of your people extensively and find lind more honor more sincerity and a greater degree of unfeigned devotion in the worship of your god than any adv other sect or people le religious or otherwise that it has failen fallen failen fallen to my lot to mingle with manifest many very serious questions have ha e come to mv iny mind of late regarding in 11 the persecutions that are neing being arrayed against you I 1 ask myself these questions ons or at least they force forde them selves upon me namely Is it because you are not loyal and true to the government tha that titis it is your duty to honor and aad support the answer cemes cames to me no rio this cannot be that you you support the government in paving paying your taxes promptly besides chenin 1846 the call was made upon your people for a battalion 0 of f of your best men to join loin in the conflict then existing between the united states and mexico did you refuse no but furnished the men and that too under the most painful circumstances that a people could be placed in at the time Is it because you are not a virtuous people no that cannot be for I 1 find that f emale female virtue is esteemed so highly by you as a people that the despoiler of the chastity of any female old or young is deemed worthy ot the same doom that would falato fall fail to the lot of a cold coid blooded murderer Is it because you as a people are not true to your marriage vows either as mists or monogamists I 1 say no this cannot be because your doctrines or teachings are to protect virtue at trie the risk of life and to regard the marriage covenant as sacred Is it because you are infanticides or foeticides nobou no you fou are carrying out the great creat command given to adam and eve in the garden of eden viz increase and multiply and replenish the earth 12 but hold your ear close to me and I 1 will whisper to you my idea in regard to the cause ol 01 this persecution ils ids because you are not deep enough in tet let to suit irany many of those who ero pro profess fess externally to be the followers oj of the meek and lately jesus but internally are a batch of corruption 1 1 4 I have no other object I 1 in penning this but to do justice justlee respectfully A LIBERAL LIBERAL 0 i AND 4 r IDAHO TERRITORY june an and nd 1885 editor deseret news I 1 have witnessed for some d decades the persecutions of the dior mormons cormons Mor Alor mons which the instigators and perpetrators would fain give another title to but as facts are not evasive nor figures manipulated by the expert mathematician apt to err I 1 by close scrutiny that ahat prosecution has taken sufficient change to warran warrant t the orthographical distinction contained in the word persecution se although h it requires lapse of time for the admission to beg be generally ene cne rally raily made in the clays of the ancient saints it was not generally ad admitted of course that the persecution v waged exactly synonymous but they seem t to be progress progressing in on thal thai scale TO TINTIC your correspondents knowing that you vou and your our readers have an interest in in the tile territory feel it their duty to let uhe the people have some news from UTAH COUNTY eti edi of tile the wealthiest so unties in the territory we leave pro provo 0 w without saying anything about it asdour readers are arc already ft the place suf nice lice it aitto to say sas it Is the capital of the county y heavill Le leaving leasing avill provo for jor Spring springville ville we traveled along que of the worst roads in utah and in all probability the most moat used as it is the main road f from roni here heru ta southern utah SPRING springville VILLE it Is safe to say is one ot of the prettiest settlements in utah I 1 and has in it some of the most energetic and enterprising enterprise enter men in the county it I 1 is like its ita it s neighbors an incorporated city of about 2 or inhabitants and has everything in the shape ot of busine business gs required to make up a city of today tile the court house and Theatre and some of the school houses and residences lre lie vve nye really beyond the average to be found in other places of the saml same size it has one thing in it that is a great benefit to the traveling public who desire to stay ill in town a day or so that is ar a railway allway depot in the centre of the place the depots of most otner places being some one or two miles out of town A drive of six miles south of spring ville took us to SPANISH vork FORK here your correspondents were de lih lifted ted to meet sister hannah cornaby one of best writers and composers where they received a hearty welcome and a good ref refreshing freshing meal we must not forget for ge A brother samuel cornaby whom we found busily engaged in attending to his nis bees and honey in this industry lie he has been most successful and has now elou enough h stands on his place to raise from 3 OW to pounds of honey a year ear all of which he informs us he has no trouble in selling at a good price spanish fork does not on being entered from the north cause a strail stranger er to have a very good opinion of it kr erom from om the great number of old half finished tumble mmble down adobe houses one is compelled to call it the most antiquated town in the territory this however may be due to the foreign styles adopted in building the houses as the place was in early das mostly settled by people f from rom row ane old uld world of whom a goodly number still remain here you can probably find more nationalities represented here than in any other one utah As A a general thias thins the buildings are of the cheapest kind but it will ae be but afew a few years until spanish fork will have some fine line places in it as there is a mania among the people lor for for building new and better residences from spanish fork we traveled towards BENJAMIN a settlement southwest of spanish fork about six miles not being acquainted with the road we had bad considerable sid erable trouble in finding the proper way herece here we would like to sugg suggest west gest that the residents of outside districts would do meil well to practice accuracy and minuteness when giving directions to strangers and at the same time learn a little more about dist distances ances anees and locations we finally reached our destination for the day and put up at the house of A J stewart sen f for of the night in the morning mr sir stewart showed us his blooded stock of which he has quite a number mr air stewart in 1874 bought a young cow at the kentucky state tair fair bred oy jas L grigsby which got the first prize in her class cliss her dam took the first prize as a for three years at at the state fair of kentucky at the same time he bought a young bull bred by Bi ownell combs of kentucky these two animals being pure bred short horns hums or durhams ot of the very highest type mr air stewart now bas has some of the very best bred cattle in the territory his young cows and bulls he has sold for 75 to as yearlings yearnings year lings among his buyers may be mentioned the following stock men of utah ievans of lehi W if chipman american fork james low 1 beaver and K R brereton provo when wilen such men as these patronize a stock raiser one une ma may y be sure they are buying where they can get the best animals alter after lookin looking at the cattle our attention was called to the horses first anthe list is billy a bright ba bat bay stallion standing over 10 16 hands hick high and weighing weighing 1200 pounds when in ordinary condition ConiTi tion from this horse mr air stewart has bred a number of young ones and has four or five now in tri aning under the care and charge of two experienced trainers ile he has h S one or two that he expects will mate make make better time tima than lie tie has a half mile track near his fixed up ill in good shape 9 and it is his intention in a short time to plant quitu quite a few shade trees and lay off the place properly for a regular re I 1 ular race track in addition to stock raising mr air stewart has entered into farmin ar ir having this year ear con for the breaking broking up of or goo acres of new n ew lano lana one week before our arrival the body of the boy hone who was drowned in the river some few weeks aco aso was found on the shore of the utah lake the lads ads death was wass in reality caused bue by neglect lector bector or ignorance 1 as there had b baen an a bridge erected over the river on a road below where the boy lost last his life a month mouth or mare before the accident took place and not over three miles from the residence of the tho boys parents on leaving benjamin and during our trip south to payson we found the crops looking very well as was the case through all the otah utah utah county towns and ille the farmers are f eeling feeling jubilant over the prospects of a good market for grain and also an abundant harvest spring lake and santaquin San each dc de herye berve a brief mention which time and space will not permit we found our old od friend brother ell Opens openshaw baw at the San santaquin coop co op jovial and contented as ever evor in his hib position tion as superintendent in of that business which is creditably conducted to judge by the appearance of the store business seemed better in santa quin than at any of our towns it is presumed to be on account of the lumber trade with and beca because iise ilse most of the garden truck used in tin tic is raised in santaquin San we ve won for tor ourselves the title of travelers by going into GOSHEN gosher the tile great goshen whose mysterious portals it is claimed have to be entered to become a traveler to put all joking aside any person who makes light of this beautiful lul tul place must do so through igno arnce arnee as it is one of the finest locations in our country it is bounded on the north by an arm of utah lake which extends farther south than is generally trene irene rally raily supposed goshen is a settlement of about 1500 or 2000 inhabitants it is laid off in i squares somewhat after the style of salt lake we must not leave goshen without giving the authorities a hint that they would certainly improve their cemetery I 1 if f thoy they were to erect a fence afonce around it as those who are unable to put one around their departed relatives and friends have to levae their graves to be run over by the cattle etc roaming at large e 1 1 there ere are a few chances to take up good farms in the suburbs where some have been taken up lately we leave this famous town and proceed on our way to EUREKA tintic gintic which at the present time is working under a cloud the troubie trouble trouble troubie existing is between the two great mining companies ompa riles eureka and abd beck beek which lawsuit bids lids fair to be the greatest that ever occurred in this western country and is making things unusually duill dulli dull duil as payment of theli thell the hands bands ands on the beck beek has been discontinued f for sor or three months and on the eureka for two months and general dissatisfaction is apparent on all sides eureka is a veritable mining town in every sense of oi the word with saloons in almost every other store the buildings with the exception of one or two cases are of the cheapest material and hogs are running at large at the ratio of two hogs to every person in eureka including children we will close our correspondence by saying we had a very enjoyable time and would advise anyone who is interested in utan products a trip through utah county AND FELT JUDGES OF ELECTION the utah commission have
