Merrill Dies, Vice President of USU Milton Rees MerLOGAN rill, 70, vice president of Utah State University, and prominent e d u c a tional and civic load-er- , 1959-196- died Tuesday in a Logan hospital a after Births Target of long illness. Merrill Dr. was employed at Utah State in University 1927 by the office of publicity and public From that time relations. until his retirement in June 1971, he was director of extension services, assistant to the president, dean of summer school, head pf the Department and Political of History Science, dean of the School of Business and Social Sciences and vice president. A native of Richmond, Dr. Merrill attended Richmond public schools, but completed high school in Brigham Young College in Logan. In 1917 he entered Utah State University. Death Takes Dr. W. Ii. 1925-192- Honorary Degree A prominent administrator of education throughout Utah, Dr. Merrill received an honorary degree Doctor of Humanities from Utah Saie University in 1969. The USU Beard of Trustees also named the new university library in his honor, and in 1968 launched a campaign to establish the Milton R. Merrill Professorial Chair in Political Science, which was formally established in the spring of Middlemiss 1971. In 1356 Dr. Merrill was t'. faculty honor lecturer at Utah State University and in 1965 was the speaker at USU Commencement. A member of the Logan City Boaid of Education for 16 years, Dr. Merrill also served on the board of directors of Logan Savings and Loan Co. Dr. Middlemiss y Native of Utah Lake City, Dr. Middlemiss was born Dec. 25, 1895, a son of William and native sion for Cooperation in Higher Education. In 1965 Dr. Merrill was appointed by Gov. Ramp-toto serve on the steering committee assigned to prepare a master plan for higher education in the State of Utah. He also served for three terms on the executive council of the American Political Science Council. Dr. Merrill taught in the Political Science Department at USU until his n retirement. degree from the University of Utah in 1918, attended Columbia Medical School and the University of Maryland, and received an M.D. degree from the University of Maryland College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1921. He interned and had his residency at the Salt Lake General Hospital. Dr. Middlemiss started in private practice in Salt Lake City in 1923. He was a member of the LDS Hospital staff from that time until his retirement in July, 1971. A member of the Utah Rose Society, Dr. Middlemiss was instrumental in organizing the Salt Lake Mens Garden Club, and served as the clubs first president.
