presiding the tabernacle choir was in attendance and san sang the two opening hymns prayer was wag off offered ered by elder win wm K R jones the roll roii rollof bf the forty one associations included in the stake being called by brother george F felt who acted as clerk pro tem tern as was very generally responded to lie he then read the statistical report for the past five months mouth of 0 bachot each odthe the several associations except cc t those of mill creek taylorsville Taylors ville a and granger grander from which no reports had been received showing a total of 2487 members 1787 of whom are males and females with an average attendance of 1035 1 the total num number berof of meetings held were while visitors had boen been sent out and received and 1 29 1 members of the associations were reported as being upon missions A band of young musicians numbering a score or more mostly members of the ath ward improvement association and having for instruments a violin a number of guitars and several harmonicas harmo nicas then played an air which so delighted the audience that it was scarcely possible to repress the disposition to applaud A speech on mental and moral culture was then delivered by elder nepal Y schofield a member of the 2 ward Institute which was replete with good ideas and souna sound advice this was followed by five live members of the ward association singing evening B bils blis lis ils 11 then came a lecture by elder eider josiah burrows of the ward association on the lite of david W patten the first apostle of this dispensation who was martyred marty red the subject proved to i be a very interesting one and the manner in which chit it was treated evinced profound study on the part of the speaker abid and that he not only possessed a good memory but a proper appreciation of the character of the great man whose life he reviewed evan stephens next sang the new song A last fond look oi home with organ accompaniment by jos J daynes elder edwin F parry of the sixteenth ward association then read an essay written for the occasion which was published in yesterdays NEWS under the title of 66 now how ilow excellence is obtained 11 this was followed by another tune from the band and then elder geo gm C lambert offered a few remarks on mutual matters in general and the necessity of keeping up the interest in the associations in particular A continuance ti nuance of the weekly meetings wherever practicable throughout hout bout the summer season was recommended and the thie holding of meetings once a month at least urged as a necessity annual reports were also called for from the various associations to be handed in not later that april ard 3rd the practice of changing 11 officers in the associations every year was discouraged coura cou raged there existed some good reason for it if they were efficient and I 1 faithful altaf ua there was no reason why they should retained in office year after year the subject of withholding patronage from enemies was also spoken upon and the following preamble and resolutions bearing upon the same we were reread read and unanimously adopted as the sense of the meeting whereas there exists in the territory of utah at the present time a conspiracy against the peace and liberties of the community of latter day saints generally and our parents and friends particularly and whereas V reas the conduct of those engaged in this attack upon the people of whom we form a part Is besides being inhuman cruel and b brutal r u tal tai in direct opposition to constitutional principles and the true genius of the genuine american system of we are bound to uphold therefore be it resolved Ke solved that we consider the course of those anti antl mormon I 1 crusaders as utterly detestable and aud rep reprehensible i e hen sible also resolved loe Jie solved that we view such characters in the light of enemies of mankind in general add an of the latter day saints I 1 in particular a rt cu ar cheref therefore ore be it further nt ile lle gs solved ivd that that we mutually agree to withhold I 1 from kom rom them and allwoo all ail who give them aid and sympathy all business patronage and use our influence to induce uce all others to take a similar course also resolved lie Jie solved that henceforward we will patronize those only who are friends of
