Glacier National Park, in Northwestern Montana, is a land of shining lakes, towering . , . peaks, icy glawaterfalls and heavily ciers, timbered areas. Glacier is a paradise for hikers and mountain climbers, with more than 1,000 miles of trails. Easy sloping trails or rugged isolated paths. . . theyre here in abundance for beginner or veteran hikers. On the extreme southern edge of the state, with three entrances in Montana, is Yellowstone National Park, the oldest and prooably most widely known national park. What a delight to see and enjoy Old Faithful Geyser, photograph and enjoy the lumbering antics of those famous beggar d bears, catch glimpses of moose, elk, buffalo, snow-cappe- tike d close-at-han- deer, antelope and perhaps coyotes, and to stand in awe as the Yellowstone Piver thunders through its own Grand Canyon leaving froth and foam hundreds of feet in the air as evidence of its eternal power. Speaking of water, it has often been said that Montana is trout stream offering some of the best fishing on the North American continent On your trip through the Big Sky Country, schedule plenty of time to dip a line in the Madison, the Gallatin, the Yellowstone, the Big Hole or any of the other crystal clear rivers and streams. Access to them is often merely a matter of just driving off the road. is a fifty-thousand-m- ile Custer Battlefield, just off Interstate 90 in southeastern Montana, is' visited by thousands of travelers each year. In opening the West, explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark covered more miles in Montana (1940 miles) than in any of the other 10 states which they touched. History buffs come from all parts of the world to visit the famed Custer Battlefield National Monument where General George Armstrong Custer his last made and lost stand against the Cheyenne and Sioux warriors at the battle of the Little Big Horn. Each year the Crow Tribal Council stages a reenactment of the battle on land immediately adjacent to the original battle site. The reenactment is staged annually in mid July.
