| Show OX ON THE WAY TO DETROIT BROTHERS TENEY TE BY KEMPE AND aih curl curi interviewed IN ITEn VIEWED the fol foi following lowin from the Albu albuquerque quer que new mexico y journal will be perused with interest by many of our readers the dithe readers of the journal will remember m that a few days ago wo we published the account of the conviction and sentencing of 01 three mormons cormons onsby by judge howard of arizona these three bishops tenney kempe and Chri passed through this city last night on their way to the penitentiary at detroit michigan where they will be confined for the next three years and a half they were in charge of united states Ar marshal arshal of arizona the journal reporter saw the trio a at t the depot and at once sought an interview they did not seem at all averse to being 11 questioned 1 and in fact were eager that thal b they should be thoroughly understood bishop tenney said that he was the first mormon that had ever gone into arizona and that he had gone there with the full intention of living up to the laws and making a good citizen he said that he evennou even now after aften conviction he lust felt as firmly as ever that his religious alous belief was the right one when judge howard had asked him if he had anything to say why the sentence of the cour court should not be pronounced upon him he tried to answer but was not allowed to proceed the bishop stated that the cases of ef all who were convicted would be appealed to the tha territorial supreme court and from thereto there to the united states supreme sup r eme court should the decision be against them lie ile he did not believe so he said that a man could c uld be imprisoned in america for following h his religious belief bellef and he felt that such was the state of fairs irs indis in his case it would atwould not be nearly as hard to bear were it not forthe fact that none of those convicted were whre even oven well fixed in this worlds goods so that now their families must suffer lir lin mr kempe had two wives and twelve child children reh reb while one of the others had three wives and twenty two children all three seemed to the reporter to bevery be very much cast down at the position in which they naw now find and themselves and we could not help believing that they had little hope in the courts |
