lake city sunday morning july ath 1884 REPORTED BY JOHN IRVINE THE speaker commenced b by y reading the chapter of the book boole of alma in the new edition of the book of mormon after which he said thus readeth the chapter of alma my brethren and sisters will doubtless remember that this Is a part of the address or epistle that alma wrote to his son Corlan corian Cori corl antum turn whose mind had been considerably disturbed disturbed and exercised over the resurrection of the dead after reading this chapter it seems as though any anything that I 1 might say would be very weak especially in view of the fact that we are today the mourners and doubtless every heart is filled wita with reflections reflections that are much easier felt and experienced perien perlen erlen erien ced than they are e expressed if there here Is any time when xit it seems as though silence is the greatest eloquence it is on occasions like the present we are called upon to part with a friend a beloved brother one who has been faithful so far as I 1 know in all things entrusted to him a man of integrity a man of worth a man of humility a man of god his life has been before the people to a great nat extent he has been somewhat prominent for many years and he has left an unblemished record we are called upon it seems to me more frequently these days to part with our friends and especially with men of prominence than we were a few years ago the men who took part in this work in the early days who started out in their youth as members of the church have reached ripe manhood and old age and they are arc dropping off one by one oue reminding us that the time Is not far distant when there will be a new generation upon the theatre of action new men so to speak will step forward to take like upon them the responsibilities that have been so well so worthily and so valiantly borne by the men who ed edana and are now passing away I 1 chave have been greatly struck with this in reflecting upon the changes that have occurred since the death of president young it seems as though it was only a few days since he was here in our midst we have scarcely got over the habit of looking for him to come on the stand and to come into the office so recent does it seem since he was here but since his death there have been six apostles ordained to the quorum of the twelve apostles one half of that quorum are so to speak new men this this gives us some idea of the changes which are occurring and how rapi raol rapidly the men of experience ar are e p passing assin away aping behind the val vail 1 to in mingle I 1 n le in ot other otner ner her scenes to labor I 1 in n a it higher ight e r sphere and to take U their p part a r t in that great work which Is pro progressing in that world to which we are hastening my nit constant and earnest prayer is that god will still raise up men of faith men of integrity men of valor to take the places aces of those who are going I 1 dougl doubt not that he will in fact I 1 feel sure that this work will lose nothing by the departure of those who are cald called to go for as has been remarked al already there Is a constant stream of emigration from the spirit world of noble spirits to take the places of those who are going hence As they pass away having filled their probation others are pressing forward to the cates gates of life anxious to emerge into this sphere of existence pressing forward a vast column of them noble and holy beings ready to take their part in the probation which god has assigned unto all his children we often think when we are perplexed and annoyed and tried in our feelings and sometimes in our faith that our lot is somewhat hard latter day saints in day days that arc are passed especially I 1 when subjected to active persecution tion and the victims of hate have felt that Is some have felt that thac they could not bear it any longer it Is recorded of sidney RI bigdon clon cion abo with the prophet joseph joseh smith hab haa had seen the lord jesus wirl will who 0 had tle the events of eternity 0 opened enea to him and who had been greatly gifted and blessed of god it is recorded of him that upon one occasion when a prisoner in jail in the state of nils dils missouri he felt that his sufferings suffering s were unbearable that they were greater than he should be called upon to endure and he murmured about his afflictions this doubtless was partly the cause of his losing the spirit of god and becoming an alien to his work bodour god our eternal father knows the condition of us all he understands our circumstances and he has promised unto every soul that he will give unto him or her strength according to his or her day ile he does not forget his children his providence is over them ills his angels are around about them ana and have charge concerning them lie he knows that which Is best for us and in calling upon us to pass through certain circumstances if we submit to them patiently receive them in the proper spirit we will find that they are the best adapted to make us perfect before him and to fit and qualify us ils for that life which Is to come we are in a world of sorrow a world of affliction a world of pain paint a world of death god has ordained this probation for us it was prearranged pre arranged before we came here that we should descend like our lord and master alaster below all wingkin thing thinK Sin order that we may rise rie above all things and ile he calls upon his children to pass through these scenes to bear them patiently patient li to submit to them in the proper spirit with a promise that if they do so their reward shall be ample ampie it Is a remarkable fact and we should reflect upon it often in fact it should be before our eyes continually that jesus christ the son of god the greatest being that ever trod the earth lived a life it may be said of abject poverty all the days that ile he was upon the earth he who created all thin things s the lord of life ilfe and glory ry descended c e n te a so low as to be born in a stable tabie and be cradled in a manger and had scarcely anything with which to supply his wants most pathetic were the words which ile he uttered tip upon one occasion revealing most moat graphically the condition la in which he was vas placed namely the foxes have holes and the birds of the air have nests but the son aon of man bath not where to lay jay his head the animal creation were provided lor sor they had their places of resort their habitations but lie he was de destitute statute among habitation his fellow ellow men lie he had not a p place I 1 ace to lay ills lils head I 1 and it was so all ali a I 1 1 his life dying as lie he did a death of ignominy now if pleasant circumstances were the best thin bilings s and tile tiie best for us to endure zd and to pass through no doubt god would have hase 0 o arranged it in the case of llis his only begotten son but ile he called him to pass pabs through these terrible scenes ills his life was a continual scene of trial and temptation and perse persecution cution and finally as I 1 have said lie he was put to death he passed through these without faltering accepting the dispensation of his fathers providence acknowledging ills his father in everything that ile he did in all the circumstances circumstanced surrounding him submitting patiently to them knowing that in tae wise providence dence of his father they were destined for ills his good and lor for ills his eventual exaltation with such an example as tills before us we ought to hesitate when we ar are e are inclined to murmur we ve ought to pause when we are inclined to find lault fault with those circumstances which may surround us we may have afflic affliction we may have great sorrows there may be circumstances of the most painful character connected with our lives but if our trust in god is unfaltering fal fai faltering terin swe we will accept them as a part of the dispensation ot of ills liis providence to us when I 1 see men aud aua and women in poverty I 1 often reflect upon the remark t that at was made to the rich man in the parable of our savior he said to the rich man ahou in thy lifetime re thy good things and likewise lazarus evil things but the day of compensation nad had ar rived lazarus had gone to the bosom of abraham while the rich man was in a place of torment I 1 often otten think that there Is a great compensation pensa tion awaiting the humble and the poor and the destitute who in this ilfe ilie do not have their good things if they are patient if they are submissive if they cling to the ane truth if they are obedient to the commands of god undoubtedly there will be a day of reward for them the main maln thing for tor us iny my brethren and sisters bisters is to cherish in our hearts the spirit that god gives cherish those good and holy influences that he pours out upon ills his children live up to the light that he has revealed if we do this we are as perfect in our sphere as god our eternal father is in ills his every being and I 1 take pleasure in reflecting ing upon it every being no matter what his condition or circumstances no matter what his race or his nationality lity lily no matter what his creed may be very every e being who lives u up to the light that god has given whether ethen ether it be much or little is perfect in his sphere just as god the eternal father is and will receive a reward according to the light that he has received there is an important truth revealed unto us in one revelation thatis that is given and that is that the heathen nations will be redeemed and they that knew not law shall come forth in the tile first resurrection and it shall be tolerable for them there is a grand thought in connection with this that they who know no law shall have the privilege of coming forth in the first resurrection god has said this and ills his word cannot fall they will be redeemed because doubtless they lived up lip to the light that they had reee rece received ived that which god had given unto them and then says the revelation shall the heathen na nations t ions lons be redeemed and they that know no law shall have part in the tile first resurrection and it shall shail be tolerable for them antl anti satan salin shall be bound that he shall have hav hae no place in the hearts of the children of men there have been ideas pre pro vaili valli ng in many quarters that the heathen nt nations ions would be consigned to endle endie torment and that there was no redemption for r them but bow sive is the plan of salvation salvati oll oli ilow liow glorious is the gospel of tite tire son sou oil of god I 1 it is indeed glad allin tiding 4 to every soul glad tidings of great preat ecat reat jov lov for even the heathen shall br be redeemed though they knew no law yet they shall come forth from the dead anit arit have part in the first resurrection this isso different from the tho traditions of mei mem so contrary to many of the teachings of those who have professed to know something concerning concerning the plan of salvation tand lind sisters god has revealed unto ut the everlasting gospel he has hav revea revealed led unto us the plan of salvation ile he has extended unto us the most glorious promises that tha were ever made unto any of the children of men ile he has placed within our reach the gift of eternal lives ile he has promised unto us glory and lih irh immortality mortality in fact every gift glit that is desirable or that any being can enjoy he lias nas promised unto us let me read to you on a little of what god has promised promise to those who are faithful to him in these last days day dayland sand and I 1 do not commandment which he be has given 53 52 that by keeping the tile commandments they might be washed and cleansed from all their sins gins and receive the holy S spirit irit by the laying on of the hands of him ai bo hols hois s ordained and sealed unto this pow pon power er 53 and who overcome by faith and are sealed by the holy spirit or of promise which the father sheds forth upon all those who are just and true 54 they are they ahey who are arc the church of the first born 65 55 they are they into whose hands the father has given all things 66 56 they are they who are priests and kings who have received of his ful ness and of his glory 57 and are priests of the tile most high af after ter the order of Melchi meichi bedek sedek which was after the order of enoch which was after the order of the only begotten son 53 wherefore as it is written they are gods even the sons of god 59 wherefore all things arc are theirs whether life or death or things present or things to come all are theirs and they are christs and christ Is gods 60 and they shall overcome all things 61 wherefore let no man glory in man moan but rather let him glory in god who shall subdue all enemies under his feet 62 62 1 these shall dwell in the presence of god and his christ for sor ever and ever 63 these are they tiley whom lie he shall bring with him when he shall come in the clouds of heaven to reign on the earth over his people 64 these are they who shall have part in the first resurrection 65 these are they who shall come forth in the resurrection of the just 66 these are tiley they who are come
