During a lull in the conversation and with liberal folks at a social affair lulls are quite rare I meekly announced from a quiet comer of the room that I kind of liked Spiro Agnew. AN ASTOUNDED gasp arose from the crowd. Like Spiro Agnew? How could anyone say such a thing? It isnt popular in intellectual circles to like Spiro Agnew. What do you like about him? a woman who recently completed a two-hocourse in political science at the University of Utah at the age of 54, ur asked. Well, I said, Spiro says it like he thinks it is. He doesnt hem and haw. Agree with him or not, everyone knows where he stands on every issue. To me, this is refreshing. Lucki'y, the host toddled in with an- other gallon of martinis at this time, and further argument was prevented. But an hour later the conversation weaved around to another controversial Max Rafferty, superintendent person of instruction for the state of California and a Tribune columnist. COMMENTS ON Mr. Rafferty were quite scoffing. Great laughter was provoked by several Max Rafferty jokes. Again, during a lull, I gently injected: T kind of like Max. He makes people think, and anyone who makes people think is valuable. I dont agree with him all the time, but, you will have to admit, he provokes. Well, three liberals at the party two males and a female started taking their coats off for a fist fight But we were saved from chaos and a brawl by the arrival of another gallon of martinis. THE CONVERSATION settled down to more important topics like the New York Mets, the price of steaks and whether Calvin Rampton will ever become a U.S. senator. Then, from a far comer came loud laughter. Ore liberal was telling Shirley Temple jokes. The theme of the ridicule was that it was stupid for a nation to have a child movie star as a representative in the United Nations. Shes in her 40s, I said, and hasnt sung On the Good Ship Lollipop for 37 years. Why shouldnt she be in tne United Nations? There was a stunned silence in the room. All eyes turned to me cool eyes, too. Just then, thank goodness, the host and hostess arrived with great trays of food. And even liberals will stop talking long enough to eat. Elaine didnt allow me to finish the food. Included with the sandwiches came a glowing report that Taul Newman, the actor, was thinking about becoming president of the United States. HOW WONDER FIX, gushed a lady liberal with half of a sandwich in her mouth. Another liberal agreed: We need a man with Paul Newman's background in the White House. Mr. Deal noted that S.P.s stock is now low, but that in fact earnings are higher than they were when stock value was higher. Charles W. The other railroad figures used for comparison, Ur. Deal admitted, were based only on transportation stock.
