Show SOME OF THE CROPS RAISED IN BEAR RIVER VALLEY IN 1907 some ot of the most prosperous farmers in this valley have declined to furnish crop reports for publication lest they be accused ot of bragging so we have found it necessary in some instances to get mr Bs report from mr A and the latter again from fro in neighbor D intelligent people do not consider a statement of facts as bragging and as for imbeciles imbe ciles we do not expect them to read this paper anyhow we regret our inability to print a larger number of facts concerning the returns of our best farmers on our best farms but these are sufficient to show the possibilities of course we have aimed to show tile the best that has been done there are thousands of acres of land in utah that are worthless for farming purposes and there are some farmers who are arc worthless for any purpose but we are confident that there are many thousands of acres of land in the beat bear river valley just as good a as s the land where the crops herein reported were grown such reports as these will be more common when the large farms are reduced in size and more careful attention is given to the cultivation and of the land WHEAT AND OATS mr john sommer and others purchased a new thrashing outfit using gasoline instead of coal tor for fuel at the beginning ot of the present season they report the entire run tor for the season in round numbers as bushels there being approximately bushels of oats bushels of 0 barley and 1000 bushels ot of wheat As there were nine other machines threshing in this valley it la Is probable that the total product of 0 grain grown in the valley this year was more than bushels the prices for grain have been better than usual this year and farmers are wearing a broad smile SOME GOOD RECORDS the largest acreage and the best average was grown on the sommer farm where acres average averaged oil 3 bushels per acre 80 acres of this averaged bushels per acre many small tracts of 0 oats threshed by this machine averaged fiam 75 to bushels per acre on sod ground that had bad been plowed last fall for spring plowing mr dan ackerman showed the best average of which we have heard beard where thirty acres produced 2400 bushels ot of oats the dit ference in yield between fall and spring plowing Is about 23 25 bushels per acre this valley Is supposed to excel any other part of tile the united states in the quality of its oats as well as its yield per acre As corn Is not grown here successfully oats always command a good price tor for horse feed in the local market 40 cents a bushel usually and owing to superior quality our oats are in demand at the meal mills where they aro are ground for breakfast food bear river barley finds a ready market at the utah breweries and at present prices Is about as profitable table as oats wheat on irrigated sod land will yield forty bushels per acre and the here Is SO 80 cents a bushel which is above the usual price experienced farmers state that it is as easy to got get bushels of oats per acre from bear bar river valley soil as forty bushels of wheat and that oats usually give a larger profit about seven mile miars west of tremon ton at thatcher Thatch cr insides mr II 11 r alan roche who reports his yield of oats from acres of land as bushels an average of nearly 83 bushels an acre isaac burnhope another west side farmer living in the neighborhood of point lookout had eighteen acres of oats that gave him an average of bushels to the acre or over 2000 bushels mr andrew has one of the finest forty acre farms in the valley ills his yield of oats was about 90 bushels per acre and ot of hay live five tons per acre some of his big apple trees broke down with the weight ol of apples J C reichers who lives about a mile south of tremonton Tre monton had a big crop of oats this season but while the yield was not so large per acre as some have raised on smaller fields it li shows what intelligent farming fanning will do on irrigated lands on thirty five acres lie he had an average of bushels to the acre on eighteen acres an average of bushels to the acre and lie had had thirty acres more lacre that gave him ninety bushels to the acre mr belchers Ild Rel chers informs us that lie he irrigated these oats but once during the season he thinks the people pay too much attention to irrigation and not enough to drainage mr christ came to the dear bear river valley ten years ago and sought work as a farm hand he found the work and plenty of it but he made up his mind to be his own boss boas and a nd now he owns acres of land a few miles south of tremonton Tre monton he makes th thel following report lor for this years harvest barvest forty acres of oats yielded 80 bushels per acre 9 acres 90 bushels per acre 50 acres bushels per acre As the price bo be sold gold for was per pounds it will be ba observed that the returns were more than 35 an acre which Is near the price lie he paid for the land at the time of purchase air weiss Is also something of a potato raiser rali cr arid and we may have something to say about his spuds belore before we got get through in order to show that 1907 has not been an exceptional year in the bear river valley we submit the following taken from the times of 1908 1906 tom lynch who came to bear river valley from peoria ill harvested in 1904 1000 bushels of 0 brewing barley and 1235 bushels of oats from twenty six acres this same land yielded in 1903 3 bushels of oats to the acre of the entire twenty six acres and here is another the dean farm three and one halt half miles west of tremonton Tre monton had bad one field of barley in 1906 containing twenty five acres that yielded ded 92 bushels per acre which sold gold for 4 45 cents per bushel mr air G G rector recto r farmed this land and had other crops in proportion H M holler raised 90 bushels of barley to the acre on ills his farm near tremonton Tre monton in 1906 and also realized a very large profit on a small piece of potatoes he had some 1500 bushels that he sold at a good price in april and may last alfred who has a farm one mile south of tremonton Tre monton had bad a crop of barley this his summer that nearly got him out of debt and made him smile all over fifteen acres averaged fifty two bushels per acre or bushels for the crop john shuman of tremonton Tre monton had ten acres of oats just east of town that yielded 12 1200 bushels this year mr air shuman also had another field west of town that did nearly as well SOME DRY LAND CROPS C W richards of fielding has a farm above the bear river irrigating canal and what crops he raises have to depend on oil what moisture the wirter winter season may give his soil this year he had SO 90 acres of wheat that averaged thirty seven and a halt half bushels to the acre on another acre tract lie he raised twenty two bushels to the acre ile he also had fifty acres of barley that produced 2075 bushels or forty one and a half bushels per acre in 1906 mr air richards had five acres of barley that averaged eighty bushels per acre a yield that he be says he has never seen exceeded on dry land in his thirty years experience mr air paul stark who owns a dry farm just cast of garland in the dear bear river valley produced bushels of wheat heat this season from twenty acres of land this was done without irrigation and the crop averaged forty one and one fourth bushels to the acre besides this he had an excellent crop of lucerne seed BEAR RIVER VALLEY POTATOES it if any of the croakers who say utah Is no good will come into the times office we will convince them or of one thing and that Is this that utah can raise some potatoes we have before us six ot of the tubers that weigh just 21 14 1 4 pounds the largest of these came from the farm of john burman ot f elwood and tips the scales at six alx pounds mr burman had fou acres this year from which he harvested over 1400 bushels of marketable potatoes and mr 11 A hansen of los angeles who bought the whole lot says that there are many others in ili the first two carloads that are quite as large as this six but as this was so smooth and of perfect shape he be concluded to carry it home in his grip and place it on exhibition in the chamber of commerce Comme ice in los ios angeles the other five fhe were vere by lewis Drenk nian on his village lot just above the methodist churla ch and also are of good shape smooth and white we also have some specimens of the clue blue victor that will average about two pounds each alm grown by mr air Il who says lie he did not search for the largest but just picked them up as 10 ho came down town to show their line fine shape if any of our H sends can oveat this lot lot ol 01 I 1 spuds just bring along thu the sample as proof air fred eggia eg il who resides out near salt creek delft us some fine potatoes that are almost as large as that new boy that came to his bis home a while ago ile he states that the yield on oil t three bree acres was about bushels of choice potatoes besides a large number ot of small ores 11 al holler another elwood alwood farmer brought a basket of spuds to the times office a few days ago that he ie says grew without irrigation or cut cultivation ti this summer and if they are a fair sample of what potatoes will do when neglected he can well ask what Is the use of intensive farming there were fourteen potatoes in the basket and they weighed over thirty pounds the smallest weighing one pound and ten ounces and tile the largest a little more than three pounds we noticed in the wilkes barre pa record that some one heie had put three potatoes on exhibition that weighed one pound and a quarter each which was regarded as something wonderful what would the record man think of the twenty eight wo we had on exhibition here this fall that averaged nearly three pounds each guess hed think we can raise some potatoes in utah chris weiss and ills his brother carl are very successful grobeis of spuds but tills this year their yield wa not quite up ill to the average on fifteen acres acrea chris weiss raised 2525 1525 bushels or about bushels to the acre ills crop brought him 39 cents a bushel or an all acre and lie he says there Is more money in potatoes even at that price than there is in sugar beets or grain carl weiss had between eight and nixie nine acres this year and harvested 1800 bushels of salable potatoes the only fault the alio buyers found was that they were too large MR HANSENS FARM one of the best known farmers of the north end of the valley la Is lion hon W S hansen of fielding while mr I 1 hansen has some other line fine stock his great specialty in that line Is the rambouillet Kam Ram boullet sheep and probably he has haa the finest kneet herd of 0 their breed in the united states ile he keeps about off about that number of lambs every year hla his ewe lambs bring an average of 20 each and the ram lambs 30 each when sold it possible he tries to keep the ram lambs until they are a year old but the demand for bis big stock has become so great that he cannot keep up with it cut but it is of his onion crop that we wish to speak of it shows how much better it is for a farmer to have some specialty and devote tile the principal part of his big efforts to the production of that specialty than it is to try to do too many things and not succeed with any mr hansen usually plants from seven to ten acres of onions and hires his big neighbors to grow tor for him from fifty to acres more his crop in 1906 was about 1000 bushels an acre but this year the seed failed to germinate and the summer was so cold that forty acres did not mature so that his crop was only a quarter of what it usually is last year he shipped fifty five carloads of about bushels each this year he s shipped I 1 lippe d but thirteen carloads his whole product was sent to seed grow growers ers in california to raise seed from mr hansen employs mostly indians to work in his onion fields letting them have the work by contract he says the are the most reliable help he can get but very slow they never slight their work no matter how little they get for it mr air hansen has erected a large brick house with modern conveniences and probably lives in the most beautiful country home in utah ALFALFA Is the great hay crop of utah and the best hay grown for sheep and cattle found anywhere As a pasture for hogs with ground barley or other grain alfalfa is a very profitable crop it produces three crops each year in the dear river valley and on good soil with proper care five to seven tons per acre can be produced at the three cuttings after the first season and sufficient pasture can usually be sold after the third crop is cut to pay the charges for irrigation water alfalfa Is tile the best hay bay known for dairy purposes and to rotate with grain and other crops it has no equal as a fertilizer ti in fact with proper rotation the soil will improve rather than deteriorate wherever alfalfa can call be grown successfully cess fully there is no necessity for abandoned abondo ned farms because they are worn out mr gil rector threshed the alfalfa grown on twelve acres of land this year the afeld beld being pounds to the acre which at the current price of 12 cents per pound will bring him per acre for alfalfa seed besides about 10 an acre for barley grown on this same land |
