to mr air greens place jerst 9 and ad went into his orchard where several men were just finishing the picking his crop conis consisted Aea mainly of 0 winter banana and ben davis of the dalana lie he had fifty nine trees from which lie he had picked GOO COO boxes boes of 0 large marketable apples and we judge there were twenty five bushels on the ground that had fallen while the picking was going on mr air green is so much pleased with the productiveness ti veness and quality of 0 the banana and the price it brings that he has just ordered 1500 trees to be delivered in 1909 he would have had them planted next spring but the trees for cor next springs delivery are all sold out and ho he has to wait a year his fifty nine trees occupy about halt half an acre of land and at a dollar a box about two thirds what they are worth this year his crop brings him 1200 an acre pretty good even for or bear river valley RASMUS HANSENS ORCHARD down at mr air hansens place wo we found an orchard of 0 about ten acres or say 1500 trees that have been set ten years these were mostly ben davis the remainder being jonathan and one or two other kinds the trees are set twenty lour four by twelve feet apart which mr air hanson thinks Is altogether too close and he Is going to take out every other tree I 1 in a the rows in a year or so it Is all right for a tew few crops but after that the branches intertwine too much he thinks eighteen by twenty tour four feet Is about right among the ben davis trees the boxes of apples were still on the ground though a man was hauling to the packing house and under one row it was a fine sight eight from the thirty five trees he had bad picked boxes counting trees to the acre at the same rate ot of production an acre would produce over 1300 bushels mr air hanson sold his no Is at a box and no as at or an average of 1321 a box at this rate an acre acie of his orchard would give him about 1800 ot of course the whole orchard will not average quite so we well 1 as this but on the ten acres he will have upwards of boxes which will bring him in the ne neighborhood 0 of ile he banks on tho the ben davis as a money maker and will probably set out ten acres more of them next year HARRY APPLE CROP harry seeger of 0 elwood has an orchard of about trees on two acres of 0 land they are mostly ben davis Spit and golden russets with a few baldwins baldvins Bald wins from this little orchard mr air seeger realized more than SOO an acre or fully an acre above every expense stacy sons of minneapolis bought the whole lot this orchard is only ton ten ears old profitable CORINNE ORCHARDS dr coclie of corinne Corl has an apple orchard ot of about twelve acres near corinne that was set out about ten years ago they are mostly ben davis the fruit occupied this farm tor or some twenty years cars but like many another farmer in the valley he did not set out an when lie he airet settled here put it off fur for some time and then planted a few trees tor for tire ore family use they rhey were gre groenings Green edings ings bellflowers Uell a and nd other standard id kinds ads but not enough of 0 any ono one kind to produce more than wore needed for hoi homo consumption these trees did ro EO well that sir mr filial concluded about six sears ago to set out a large kaipe orchard on tile the bluff ot of the malad where lie ho has most perfect drainage a requirement that Is often forgotten by tree planters ile he las has about three hundred trees mostly ganos with one or two rows of 0 deli ben davis this is their first seabon ason ot bearing and of course the crop is not a heavy beavy one but the trees are very thrifty and have produced some very large and fino fine specimens ile he had upwards of boxes of choice apples besides 50 bus liIs of culs culls this orchard Is the admiration ot of every one who drives eastward froni from tremonton Tre monton it overlooks the valley of 0 the malad and is a conspicuous part of 0 the landscape SOME FACTS ABOUT UTAH APPLE ORCHARDS only two or three years ago there was no market for utah apples and it was difficult tor for a nursery agent gent to sell more than a few trees to any one I 1 in tile the door bear river valley the reason why there was no market was that nobody lad had enough apples to make a decent sized wagon load let alone a car load and the lack of a market for the smaller quantity made tho the farmer sceptical about the profits to bs be derived from planting larger orchards and raising larger crops but all that has changed now and the large commercial orchard is the thing most desired by tile the apple grower and he is now buying trees by the hundred and thousand where five or ten years ago lie he only bought by the dozen those who were foresighted enough elou h to set out several acres of oc apples eight or ten years ago are arc now reaping a golden g harvest that will continue to swell their cotters coffers for or years to come there are but few such men in this valley but their number Is rapidly increasing |
