persecutors D T THE OF 1 ra narsa Earsa to the editor kaito of the ame rican I 1 wish to make known fb fo the public a method of treatment for diphtheria which has been uniformly successful success fuis fuls in the practice of the writer during a number of years which included two epidemics and in a large number of cases not a case has been lost since this treatment was adopted I 1 feel confident that by its general use the mortality may bo be reduced to one per cent or even less I 1 have heretofore delayed publishing the results in order to make surer that the treatment iwas wag was really what it promised to be and I 1 now wish to use the columns of your journal in order that the pu public bile generally may have the knowledge knowledg ei in their own possession an attack of diphtheria is usually ushered in with high fever and headache and in child children with nausea and vo vomiting g tei ien ture there is great prostration upon the ibe tonsils aud surrounding parti parta are eire been seen white snow flake patches in malignant cases clues the patches are often y yellow ellow or brownish and a Jer xer terrible odor Is perceived the remedy found successful by thew the writer liter ia is permanganate of potash in conjunction not combination with the tincture of belladonna b the method of administration isas is 03 ns 03 follows fro 2 to 3 grains not more of the permanganate are dissolved in from 2 to 4 oz of water imm Ima in a goblet gobiet eive five drops of the od cinal tincture of belladonna or better from 10 to 20 drops of the first decimal tincture of the same drug are put into I 1 to another A 0 goblet with an equal quantity 2 to 4 gozs of avater vat wat r A teaspoon tul is to be taken from each goblet alternately ac at intervals of a half or one hour houn jt it is perhaps needless toray to bay eay that sep sop separate irate spoons should he be used and the tho goblets kept covered in twenty four hours frequently a favorable guarige will be seen but quite as often the disease e seems to go on unchecked save that the fever may seem a little more moderate but I 1 can assure my readers that during the second day of the I 1 treads treatment ment a most marked change chance will take place the fever will en a subside u bridd the mind will bright e en us the tongue will begin to grow irow clean and the deposits upon the will peel offal their edges or grad gradually dAlly break away th the a patient will be upon ai th the 0 highe highway ay to ery and a day or two more of the treatment will bring back the nor mal mai mahue hue of health and au an appetite ad to correspond tn lri rare case however when the bad cache tic tie a longer time five six seven beven day maybe bo required but even here the tho treatment has baa not failed I 1 I 1 think that under this treatment diphtheria is not a disi destase lase tase to ba be dreaded by the profession t tho belladonna may mav in special cases find a substitute but not the pet ma maga ganato nate of potash the only ease case in which the aboe above treatment will promise prom isia unsatisfactory factory results is when he disease rapidly invades the and bronchial air passages diphtheritic croup when suffocation threatens to supervene before the remedy can act or when the mero mere presence of large detached deposits in the air tubes imperils im perils the success of the case such an instance recently occurred which was successfully treated with inhalation of the vapor not the spray of a dilute aqueous its solution of bromine I 1 know that thet the permanganate has been used as a disinfect ruty ruts ant locally applied in putrid theila thelia heretofore in dilute form as a eargle gurgle and upon gerie getie rai zal principles as an antiseptic but I 1 am not nol aware that the persistent use throughout the disease has heretofore been bean made known to the public or profession that it does not act as an antiseptic is shown by the fact that the other nati aati skeptics have no analogous effee effect t that it does bob sot act locally may be infer inferred ud because its marked curative effects appear in the system before they are seen in the the theory of the writer is that diphtheria finds its nutriment in partly devitalized organic matter in the blood which the permanganate rapidly absorbed As attacks and destroys by oxide exida tion being the most powerful nonpoisonous we hav have ethus thus cutting away the pabulum of the disease diseases when the deposits adlea die dle a natural death and disappear the process certainly sometimes api ia ita inaction I 1 trust that if others employ this treatment they will not ito modify it until they have first given it a fair trial in the manner above proposed I 1 i I 1 have also found the nate of potash very successful ln in the treatment of certain slow blow foris forms of putrid and typhoid fevers with loaded tongue foul bre breath atil etc ete lahd abd in recurring bolls boils this lends lendi additional dit ional force to the theory of its action above indicated I 1 am sure that this drug so richin rich in oxygen the life giner giver eo so harmless in its action upon the human system will well repay study by the profession generally which chil chit it has heretofore only received and alid that thit ina in a very inadequate degree from the comoe p fathio branch I 1 W ThI
