Show TIM THE SCULPTORS ART HARRY BROWNS BUST OF BRIGHAM YOUG YOUNG at president taylors office yesterday morning we had the pleasure of looking at a tine line plaster cast portrait bust of the late president brigham young the work of harry brown a young gentler gentleman nan of logan we had previously heard of this work which liasz en highly spoken of and that deservedly and were glad to learn of the intention of the young sculptor to bring it to till this city and place it on exhibition hibi tion it is ilow now in Sav savages alms win window numbers have already viewed the bust anion anlon among them the most prominent men in the church and we but echo the general verdict in pronouncing it a v very creditable specimen of if the sculptors tors s art it Is a little larger than life size and represents the sub subject act as he appeared during the closing years of his life when his features had assumed the serenity of age without losin losing the strength and firmness which was was one of their chief characteristics the formation of the head is very good indeed the lower part of the face exceptionally tio nally so in intact fact though the wor work may have its defects detects anif and it would be a miracle were it otherwise as a whole considering the youth of the artist the few opportunities port unities he has had and the fact that this is the third head he has ever modeled it is an excellent piece of workmanship reflection reflecting much credit on the tile artist and prea prel predicting eting greater things for him in the f future the clay model from which it was taken was commenced on the doth of march was blocked up in a day anda and a and finally finished in about thi thirteen rhall days dir nir brown took for his study several photographs of the president sic sie tent with memories derived from pers personal onal observation he worked as id ouri and night some sometimes 1 20 10 hours at a stretch until the work was completed the cast was taken about a week ago the family of president young are highly pleased as are his intimate friends with the portrait and mr nir brown has already received an order for a duplicate in marble marbie 0 for the brigham young college at logan james ilen llen henry ry brown broyn is a native 0 of f offchurch Off lurch church leamington leavington Lea warwickshire Warwick shire england where he was born july IU 1853 1833 ile he came to this country when he was five years old and has lived in cache valley vailey several years his father has ilas a stone and marble mil ell yard ard in logan logaa and harry has been working in it for about five years three years since he went v ent east and entered the boston school of sculpture under professor T H bartlett he remained there but three months being absent from home only four sour months in all and while in the school modeled two tso faces thirza and the vf venus nus of milo since his return he has 1 ly c engaged n a ed working hard to s support his bis is f family and has had bm bul little time to devote to his art considering all things we look upon n hi his hii is progress as remarkable ile he is is c certainly I 1 progress y ia the possessor of marked ability and we e v wish ish him every success in its cultivation |
