Dr. Van Dellen By George Clark The Neighbors Roger wu a happy, robust who ate and slept well and did everything he was. supposed to at that do age. He is an ideal baby, his mother said, except that he spits -- small up amounts of his leedikg throughout the day. Mother was perturbed about the spots on the rugs and furniture and she spent many hours washing babys clothing and the linens to eliminate the odojr that per- meated them. But the tyke went on cooing, gurgling, and erupting. THERE ARE several reasons why babies regurgitate. Some are serious and require thorough study for diagnosis and correction. Roger was an example of spitting up in a well infant Goren On Bridge By North-Sout- C R Goren vulnerable. South deals. Todays hand well trates a point 5 V which stress we with alacrity, namely, that aces and kings do not always play the leading roles in the slam drama. The singleton, which is the keynote of just as many slams, is perhaps as often entitled to top billing. For example, if Norths spades and clubs were interchanged there would be no slam. WE LEND NO approval to Norths bid of four hearts because there is no occasion to crowd the bidding with hands of this type. The splendid trump support, the singleton of the adverse suit, and the good side suit are all factors which should make North bullish about the hand, and he should allow himself plenty of bidding space to describe these various features In any event, the recommended bid is a one round force of two diamonds. South will then show his second suit, and North may then follow with a jump in hearts, fixing that suit as trump. South should make an effort toward slam by bidding five diamonds. This should be interpreted as a cue bid rather than an attempt to play the minor suit, since North has raised hearts so violently. At this point North holds the key to the success of the slam in the form of the singleton and should bid six hearts. ON THE ACTUAL bidding when North leaped to four hearts South was willing to take his chances on a slam if North could protect against the loss, of two spades. What was the logical way to find out? It was pointless to show one of the aces, because it was perfectly evident that North would be able to do no more than return to five hearts. Since there was not time to show both aces South concluded he would imply that he had them both, in this sequence, by bidding five hearts. THIS IN PLAIN language was intended to say: Partner, everything is under control but the spade suit, which the enemy has bid. If you can take care of it, please "bid a slam. North decoded the message properly and contracted for six hearts. To summarize: A bid beyond game to five in a major, when nothing has previously been said about a suit the opponenta have bid, should be taken as a request to partner to bid a slam if he has only one loser In the adverse suit NEW YORK with costar Doris Day, visit- ing some 7th Avenue garment offices for research on their forthcoming film, A Touch of Mink. This means that some food lags behind and the emptying time is delayed., Roger proved to be one of these youngsters. The situation was controlled by removing much of the fat from the formula. 4 Ill say this for the foreman, honey. use a little help He sees a guy could bingo he hires another assistant! Spreading methods include the use, singly or in combination, of basins, furrows, flooding, pits, shafts and wells. Q. What does the term skin effect mean with reference to the transmission of electric current? T. L. A. Direct current distrib- utes itself uniformly throughout the area of a conductor, but alternating current has a tendency to show greater density of current flow at the surface (skin) of a conducter than at its center. This tendency, called skin effect, reduces the efarea fective and raises the resistance of the conductor. The skin effect increases at a greater rate for large conductors than for small ones, and becomes more pronounced as frequency of the current increases. At extremely high frequencies, alterating current tends to flow near the surface of the conductor and to use only a small part of the conductors Copper tubing is, therefore, widely used in cross-section- THE SITUATION is different when vomiting occurs in a baby who is not progressing normally. Water spreading is a system or method of replenishing ground water in areas where it is deficient or where it is being used faster than nature is replenishing it The design and operation of a spreading system are somewhat like those of an irrigation system except that water (from rivers and canals) is spread in such a way as to percolate rapidly The Salt Laky Trlbuna Information Buraau 635 r St., N.W..
