| Show ral fal chit it pleases the be republican publican press to refer to the result rehul v of the tho utah election vesa besa aa a democratic atlo atio victory the truth troth is that mormons cormons are not unlike the irishman who on landin landing 9 in this country and being asked his hib politics replied that he was or dinst the government the mormon belief is in itself a protest agn aga against install ail nil authority and hn an open defiance of all good government whatever party may be in power will be opposed by the bra tra fc ints it will be well to remember in this connection that it II was a democratic administration which sent a military command across the mountains to awe or whip the cormons mormons into something approaching subjection to the laws 11 the above la Is from the louisville courier journal which has had a good anny many foolish things to bay say on the mormon question it is very absurd of the republican press to call the utah election a democrat aDem adam dam Dem ocra tic victory it had no moro more to do with either of the great political parties of the united states than an election for the officers pt of a business corporation utah has no vote in congress and no voice in national affairs Nelt neit neither berls la she very likely to have while the lawmakers law makers of the country of either party remain too fearful af popular clamor to do justice and act by the principles upon which the nation is found i ed but the claim of the republican press in regard to tho the utah election Is ia not any more groundless than the charge of the courier journal that the mormon beliet belief Is ia in itself a protest against all authority and an open defiance of alj nil good government 11 the fM mormon ormon belief Is that the constitution of the united states was framed by divino inspiration that the government of this country based upon that sacred instrument I 1 in supreme in its sphere that full allegiance to it in that sphere Is due from citizens cit izena of all classes and creeds that those who expect the protection of its laws must be ba obedient to those laws aad aud that the amor moz mor conall mona mons should be subject to the lawa laws of any and every nation in which they may reside this la taught and enjoined in tho the sacred books of the latter day saints and impressed upon therm them by their leaders and in tors the fact that we wa regard the sot not of july lot 1862 1663 and that or of march 1882 1883 as invasions of our religious nights night oppressive and contrary to constitutional principles does not argue arguo that hat L we vve protest against all authority or act la in ade defiance of all good government and the fact that it Is ia common to make such groundless charges does not add acid to the wisdom of the courier journal or maceil their thein repe less loss absurd and unfair neither does it alter the status of the fM mormon ormon onmon community ss as the tho most law liw abiding people on the faco of this great continent continents which is substantiated by stati statistics and demonstrated by figures that cannot lie Us it is quite likely that the saints may find something to object to in whatever party may be in power rhene are other people in ia th the alk ali same m frame of mind democrats ike ipe are n not 0 t much more free from imperfection than republicans if either party parly doos wrong we think it wrong and nrc aro likely to bay aay so no this is one of the few rights left to us our peo feo plo ara aro chiefly democratic in cal proclivities not from particular attachment to or admiration of any party but from nirm erin belief in the principles of democratic government and objection to those encroach ments upon popular rights and that enlargement of national powers at the extensor of local prerogatives 1 which the party calling itself no ee publican has favored and fostered but bat wo we claim the tho right to oppose what wo we consider contrary to true democratic republicanism in any and every party the last sentence of the courier journals tom Tow maila maiya paragraph revives memo ries which are not very flattering to the democratic administration referred to the sending bending ol of thal thai military command across alss tha the mountains to whip or awe tho the mor mons bonsnas was nas a fiasco flasco to which no prudent democratic organ ought to allude it neither whipped nor awed the Morn moru ione lone but haftel in the snow nad anu stayed there until arrangements range ments were made with the cormons mormons Mor mons to let them in to this valley it was sent to chastise the people hera hero for of fences which they had never committed the army wat was sent first and an investigation was ordered afterwards federal officers lied about the mormons cormons Mor mons and the administration acted on the tho prejudice thus thua created and the popular outcry thus thua evoked evo teed and without stopping to hear the other side of the question rushed into the fol lyof the military expedition when inquiries were instituted the falsehood of the federal officials was proven beyond dispute a and that army which neither whipped nor awed any one hereabouts returned to the states after it had bad cost the country millions of dollars and had laid the foundation for torn tora a great national debt similar lies onca once that timo time from a similar source have produced the special legislation to which we object and which forms the boje ground on which to base tho the incorrect charge of irlies ness against the it mormons cormons Mor mons and we have some rome hopes if not any very great expectations that when the democratic party comes ag again ain aln into power it will take warning by the errors of the party now losing its grip abd the folly tolly to which the courier journal unwisely alludes and hear bear both sides of the mormon question before rushing into overt acts against the peace and domestic rights of a well ordered and progressive community |
