Show D DISCOURSE BT by ELDER WILFORD WOODRUFF AT tiit tilt furty forty sixth semiannual semi annual conference vj 0 the church of J iesue of lafter latter duy day saints in the new tabernacle on the morning oming of ZT priday friday oct ath 1875 BY DAVID dawid W EVANS on death where la Is thy sting oh grave where la Is thy victory the sting of death is siny sin bin and the gift of god is eternal life through our lord and savior jesus christ this doctrine of tile the resurrection of the dead is most glorious it is comforting at least to my spirit to think that in the morning of the resurrection my spirit will have llave the tho privilege of dwelling in the very same body that it occupied here As elders of israel we have travelled a great many thousand miles in weariness and fatigue laboring to preach the gospel of jesus christ to the children of men I 1 would be very glad to have the same body in the resurrection with which I 1 waded swamps swam rivers and travelled and labored to build up the kingdom of god here on the earth I 1 like fike this I 1 rejoice in the privilege we en joynt this thi s Confer conference enbe of meeting with so many latter day saints I 1 feel that we have had a good deal of the spirit of the lord with us and I 1 hope that it may continue until we get through with the conference president young refer referred red yesterday in his remarks to the experience of soine some of us la in past days I 1 have reflected a good deal upon these things as well as on the future I 1 have long been associated with the kingdom of god and I 1 wish to refer for a moment to what was said yesterday on that subject the mh mission slon sion then mentioned was vas one of much interest to the twelve if not to the church the tha whole of that mission to england from the beginning to the end placed the apostles in such a position that they had to walk by faith from first to last the tho lord gave a revelation with date day month and year when they were to go up to lay the cornerstone corner stone in caldwell county far west misso missouri url uri when that revelation was given all was peace and quietude comparatively in that land but when the time came for the twelve apostles to fu fulfil fulfill ifil that revelation the saints had all been driven out by the exterminating i order of governor boggi and it was as much as a mans life was worth warth especially one of the twelve to be found in that state and when the day came on whiz whis which we were commanded by the lord in that revelation to go up and lay the cornerstone corner stone of that temple and there take the parting hand with the saints to cross the waters to preach the gospel in england the inhabitants of missouri haj haa had sworn that if all the other rovela eions of oid old joe smith were fulfilled that should not be because it had a day and date to it president young asked the twelve who were with him what shall we do with regard to tle tie the fulfilment fulfillment of this revelation he wanted to know their feelings F ather father smith the patriarch said the lord would take the will for the deed others sald said the lord could not expect the twelve A postles apostles to go up tip and sacrifice tice their jives lives to fulfill fulfil that revelation but the spirit of the lord rested upon the twelve and they said sald the ithe Tho lord god has spoken and we will f fulfill fulfil that revelation and commandment and that was the feeling of president young and of those who were with him we went through that state and we laid that cornerstone corner stone george A smith and myself were ordained oida olda ined to the apostleship on that cornerstone upon that day we returned in safety and not a dog to move his tongue and no man shed our blood As soon as we got home we pr prepared 0 ourselves to go on our ini mission to E england and as P president r e sl ident young has said sald the devil undertook to kill us I 1 have myself been in tennessee and I 1 kentucky len ien tucky for two or three years where in the fall fal ther there ewas was not well person 9 enough to take care of the sick durl duri duning during ug the ague months and yet I 1 never had the ague in my ilfe life until called to go upon that mission to england there was not one ono solitary soul in tho quorum of the twelve but what the devil undertook to destroy and as 01 01 ag was said yester yesterday dayi when brother taylor self tile the two first of the quorum quork M ready for the trip were on hand to s tart start I 1 was shaking with the ague and I 1 hild had it every other day and and on my well day when I 1 did not have if it my wife had bad it I 1 agot got up uli and laid my hands bands lipon upon her and blessed herand her and bless biess blessed qI my child having baving oily only one at the he time urne and I 1 started across th the e river niver vier and that man who wiio sits its behind me today to day the president of the church and kingdom of cofod god wod upon japon the earth eadd Radd paddled led me mp across the missouri niver river river in a cahoe canoe and that is the way I 1 landed in nauvoo I 1 I 1 lay y down ona on a side gide of sole leather by the old posto fuce for I 1 did not know where tb go and I 1 was not bot able to stand on my feet and I 1 lay down there by and by the pro phet came along and bald sald he brother woodruff you ar are going doing on your mission yes I 1 said 3 but I 1 feel more like a subject for the dissecting room than for a mission 11 he reproved me for what I 1 said and told me to get up and go brother taylor the only member of the quorum of the twelve who was well and I 1 traveled together and on the way he felito as though he had been knocked on the head with an axe old oid eather father er coulton was carrying us and brother taylor fell twice in that way taken with the bilious fever and ho no man in that quorum could boast that lie he went on that mission without feeling the hand of the destroyer for it was laid upon us all I 1 had the shaking ngue ague and lay on my back jn in a wagon alagon and was rolled over stumps and stones fito sito nea neB until it seemed as if my life would bo be shaken out of me I 1 left brother bruther taylor behind by hiff advice for said lie ho we are both sick and if you stay you cant do 10 lo anything here so old father coulton car cari 1 ried me his jils wagon il til I 1 got to buffalo bumm Buff lilo M N Y erom erem from there I 1 traveled mone alone to farming ton connecticut my native place ij iee ice lep and I 1 stayed there fifteen days ft at my fathers hou 0 o coughing and shaking every day evly my father never expect expected ea that I 1 should leavo leave my bed and my nay ancl anci pd to the tender mercies of stirn our noble oble bishop bishops 5 and those who ivae wore acquainted with them know how bow it was anthom days however I 1 went on my way ana atia and I 1 want to speak of one little circumstance I 1 1 haa had with wilh me an old cloak which I 1 got pot in tennessee when tra velling wilb with brother r forty years ago it lt had once been becenta A d dan an by dy cloak and hadon at k e butt abr when new had bad a good deal dal of ot trimming and fancy work about II 11 but it was the then n pretty well weil threadbare and ana worn it A in kirtland and carried it to england with me and when I 1 wab was wast call cail called calledo by xit lauon to go to john Ben bows hows and ans preach the go gopel ropel kocl I 1 wore thao that cloak I 1 went there ard ar avd d found over six bix hundred people called culled united bret ra and among them were c eighty 1 theeo preachers and a people were prepared ared for of the tho lords lord and I 1 wanted vi lplez to catch them in the dospel net AM embracing the doctrine of brethren sister benbow ben bow had been what is called a ildy sadylle lady ine lne in En cland eland and fehd hw had WOM worn ber her filks aud and und satins gatins but arten after obey obeying ob cyin ins inc the doctrin e of this religions religious body bodt sho she ent cut up and burned burn bAnd and destroyed her silks and gatins satins and wore the plainest calicoes call cali ecles she the could get because she sha thought that was waa religion when I 1 went thero thera to preach she looked at mo me with this old ke kez kes buttons on and tho the spirit Q of the lord bore testimony to me BO so far as she was concerned had bad a good deal of tradition abdat about it and nat that her falth faith could bo be tried b by I 1 th thai coat 0 at a ruan wore wone and as paul said if ak r meat of fod rod his brethren it re thren lie he would never neven cat oat any more so I 1 felt a good deai deal and ana one morning I 1 went ont out and cut nt oa off tho the button buttons from my old cleak cloak and never had a button on it afterwards by doing this ibis and some other things which some perhaps would woul 1 through the blessing of god and with the assistance of brother Youn Yonn gGeorge A smith and willard richards caught the tho whole flock and baptized every soui soul except one solitary person into the church and of god them are arc herein this room to dayana dagand some bome of them have pasted away I 1 mention this just to show our position we travelled without purse puree and scrip and we preached without money and without price why because the god of heaven had called upon us to go forth and warn the world now I 1 want to say eay again I 1 have looked around within tho the last few years and I 1 have thought where oh where are the sonson sons of the prophets apostles and fathera fathers in zion preparing in these last days to riso rise up and hear bear off this kingdom when we are on the tho other side of i the vail vall sometimes in thinking qu this subject I 1 have felt that they were stera weny tery few and far between who had the spirit of their fathers and were prepared to bear off this kingdom but bat I 1 thank think god that igind I 1 nind find it is now nor something like it was iu in the days of elijah when the prophet sald faid referring to the followers of baal they they have killed thy prophets and end pulled down thine altars and I 1 alorie alone am m ift aft the lord said oh no I 1 have seyen seven thoua thona thousand and men in israel who kave live have tot not yet bowed the knee to baal well I 1 begin to feel feci since I 1 have heard the testimonies of gur gun our young brethren at this thia conference that some come of the bons sons of the servants ef of god are becoming in filled with the fire and spirit of the prophets we want vant a good many of them to rise up and bear off this kingdom now I 1 want to say baya elya b bordor word or two on another subject I 1 have heard some of our brethren remark jf if the twelve apostles have the word of bf the lord we would like ilke to receive it I 1 want to say gay a few words with re recard regard ard to the word of the lord I 1 think that many of this people arc are mistaken with regard tuf tuu the word of th the eLord lord they wonder why president young does not give eite them the word of
