Samuel B. Axtell of Feb. 2, Salt Lake City, Utah California was appointed governor of Utah, succeeding Gov. George L. Woods. Gov. Axtell arrived in Utah Feb. 2, 1875, and was the ninth governor of the territory. He held the position of governor for only four months, being relieved of the position when he was appointed governor of the territory of New Mexico. George W. Emery was appointed In his place. Gov. Axtell's work was made difficult in Utah by the who denounced him as a because he showed consideration for the church. "I come to Utah, appointed by the government of the United States . . . and so far as I am capable of judging of my own motives, and so far as I know my own determinations, I have not come as the favorite of any particular faction or set of men. I am determined to be a governor, not oi a section, but of the whole people. Whether I can win your love or friendship, I do not know; but I intend to try to do my duty, and I believe that I can act so as to deserve the respect of all good men and women of this territory, he said in a speech delivered at Ogden, Utah, shortly after he arrived. He was tormented by the press, having no peace during his term. n 1925 Elder El Ray L Christiansen Feb. 3, Salt Lake City, Utah Since most missionaries came to church headquarters to receive instructions and go through the temple, it was suggested by Bishop David A. Smith in 1924 that a home for missionaries be established. This was approved by the General Authorities and a residence at 31 N. State St. was secured and furnished. The house was dedicated by President Heber J. Grant on Feb. 3, 1925, and the first group of missionaries arrived a few days later. Elder LeRoi C.
