Show .", 4 Olympics to begin Friday Indy hot dogs to turn it loose? I INDIANAPOLIS (UPI) -Today may be the day the "hot dogs turn it partially loose at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Some railbirds think the the fast drivers hot dogs have been holding back their machines during the first two weeks of practice for the Indianapolis slated to go May 28. e race, And theyre probably right. At cuirent attainable speeds, the chances of blowing an engine are far greater than in the past. Thus, the hot dogs and their crews apparently are waiting to run all out when it counts, in time trials and the race itself. Time trials begin Saturday, which means theres just two full days left for practice. Favorable weather today could see top speeds climb toward the barrier which just about everybody expects to be cracked this weekend. Swede Savage has the fast cst lap yet in practice this s effort. But month a the top speeds have generally been in the range. 190-19- 3 Former 500 winner Bobby Unser was Wednesdays fastest driver, turning a lap at 193.28 m.p.h. Another former champ, Mario Andretti, was next at 192.925, followed by Gordon Johncock at 192.7 and Savage at 192.5. Johncock, in the tire tests this year at the track, had a lap of 199.4. So far, 11 drivers in 13 cars have been over 190 m.p.h. Savage did it in both his No. 1 machine and his backup racer. Gary Bettenhausen reached that speed in his car and the one assigned to Bobby Allison. Sixteen cars have been over 185 out of the 62 now at the track and the 51 which have passed technical inspection. Wednesday was the busiest day of practice thus far with 42 cars out for runs. The day also saw the second WTeck of the month at the track Veteran Dick Simon escaped harm when the machine he was driving cracked the wall in the No. 1 turn. The Salt Lake City driver was in Lee Braytons car, a Foyt Coyote, when the accident occurred. Something broke going into the turn, Simon said, and spun me into the wall. The car spun completely around and hit onthe right rear. Simon spun 320 feet, banged the wall and went feet along the wall, then spun down into the infield. There were several cars on the track but all managed to avoid the spinning racer. Three-tim- e winner A. J. Foyt was not hurt when Lis machine caught fire during a run earlier Wednesday. The flames were out by the time he reached the pits. 15-2- 0 By Lee Benson Deseret News Sports Writer of the shew will kick things off Friday.
