Eble, University of Utah professor of English, will receive an honorary doctor of humane letters and deliver the degree commencement address at Saint Francis College, Bidde-forMaine, May 27. Dr. Eble, a member of the U. of U. faculty since 1955. directed the Project to Improve College Teaching sponsored by the American Association of University Professors and the Association of American Colleges from 1969-197- be pnniding us key elements that will eventually help answer some of the most important questions being asked in the nation todav: How larce will the 1973 feed grain and soybean crops be? Will there be enough to meet expanding domestic demand? Will we be able to maintain our high level of farm exports, so critical to our nations balance of trade situation? said W. Grant Lee, statistician m charge of the Utah Crop and Livestock Reporting Service of the Agriculture Department. He said the past 12 months hav e seen a number of sigmfi-ca- n t developments which have already caused some reshaping of U.S. farm policies. An unprecedented boom in demand for farm products at home and abroad is wiping out carryover stocks of a number of commodities and is causing higher prices at the farm and retail levels, Lee said. Early this year USDA officials relaxed some restrictions on wheat, feed grams and ton acreages in hopes of cotbol- stering production sufficiently to meet this surging demand A report of farmers planting intentions in March indicated that agricultural producers were planmng to increase their 1973 acreages for maior crops approximately 8 percent over the year before. We must wait for the June survey to reveal whether farmers earned out these plans, Lee said Resides asking questions on crop acreages to forecast production. the survey will also inquire about the numbers of cattle, calves, hogs, pigs and chickens These livestock and poultry questions are significant m that they enable us to update r inventory numbers and gauge the possible level of marketings during the second nnd-yea- half of 1973 and early 1974 said Lee. The Utah farmers who will be interviewed for the surve are part of a sample of neai !y 7(1 OHO scattered throughout the nation.
