Me has been so from the beginning, for lie is the Creator. The Lord always works through His authorized servants. He does not deal in devious wavs, nor through secret means, His work is out m the open. As Paul said, It was not done in a corner. (Acts 26:26) He has told us that those w ho teach are to lie ordained openly, before the Church, so that all may know that such individuals are duly appointed and authorized to teach the people. (D&C 42:11) As Amos (3:7) indicated, the Lord will do nothing except through His duly ordained servants , the prophets. ANOTHER great General Conference has been concluded. The duly chosen and anointed prophets of the Lord spoke there under the guidance of the Spirit. As they did so we were reminded in our hearts of this great principle which the Lord revealed; Whatsoever they shall speak when moved upon by the Holy Ghost shall be scripture, shall l)e the will of the Lord, shall be the mind of the Lord, shall be the word of the Lord, and the power of God unto salvation. (D&C 68:4) The leaders of the church are those inspired men. They are the servants of the Lord, empowered to speak for the Almighty in the guidance of His people. There is great significance in the last clause in the above quoted and the power of God unto salvascripture: tion. It has but one meaning, which is, that the words of the true prophets, if followed, will lead us to salvation. That is why the Lord placed these men at the head of the church, for the perfecting of the Saints, for the work of the ministry, and the edifying of the general membership. (Eph. 4) IN ALL AGES, false prophets have arisen, attempting to say that the Lords true servants are not inspired, but are misleading the people. Such false prophets pretend to have revelation themselves, going so far as to teach that illegal and adulterous practices are essential to salvation, as though salvation could possibly be based upon sin, rather than on righteousness. Unfortunately some people believe them rather than the true prophets. The Lord gave warning against false teachers early in the history of our church, for there were wolves in sheeps clothing even in the days of the Prophet Joseph Smith, trying to lead people astray. AFTER CLEARLY designating the President of the Church as the one and only man through whom revelation for the church can the Lord said and will come (see D&C 43:4-7this about false teachers: ), that you may not be deceived, that you may know that they (the false teachers) are not of me. For verily I say unto you that he that is ordained of me SHALL COME IN AT THE GATE AND BE AS ORDAINED HAVE I TOLD YOU BEFORE. In this He referred to His instructions to be found in D&C 42:11. And this I give unto you teachers come among the people advocating illegal 'dural marriage and other sinful practices, saying that they are secretly When authorized to do so, the people may know that such men are branded by the Lord himself for what they are. Hence no one need be misled by them. The path of safety is in follow ing the President of the Church. He is Gods mouthpiece. He is Gods regent here on earth. MISSION EXPERIENCES Twelve Start Mission Early in the morning, the Twelve Apostles met at Elder Johnsons home, then boarded the steamer, Sandusky, at Fairport, Ohio. By five that afternoon, the ship had sailed along the south shore of Lake Erie and the passengers went ashore at Dunkirk, in eastern New York. Thus began the first formal mission of the Council of the Twelve, May 5, 1835. It was an inauspicious beginning. The world took little note, if any. Yet from that formal beginning has grown under the direction of the Twelve, a giant missionary program that today is worldwide in nature involving 17,000 full-tim- e missionaries and several thousand stake mis- sionaries. The call to serve as missionaries had come from the The twelve shall be my disciples, and they shall take upon them my name , . . they are called to go into all the world and preach my gospel unto every creature. (Doctrine and Covenants, 18:27-8.- ) By direction from the Prophet Joseph Smith, they were sent to the eastern seaboard to proselyte and hold meetings among the branches of the church for the purpose of regulating all things necessary for their welfare. The Twelve preached in the area of Dunkirk for a few days, then met at Westfield, May 9, according to previous agreement. Thomas B. Marsh, the oldest man in the quorum, presided at the meeting. Among items considered were the setting of the boundaries of the conference (or mission) of Westfield, determining that the doctrine that had been preached among the branches was correct, meeting the elders within the conference, and, of course, preaching the gospel. On the second day of the conference, members were exhorted to contribute to the purchasing of land in Zion for the gathering of Israel, which many Saints covenanted to do. At the end of the meetings, seven persons were baptized by Elder Orson Hyde. The Twelve also administered to many sick, who obtained relief, then adjourned, agreeing to meet again May 22, at Freedom, N, Y. The brethren continued laboring in the eastern United States through the summer and returned to Kirtland Sept' Lord: urts TOWN & COUNTRY Magazine recently car- ried an illuminating article about the harmful effects of coffee. The conclusion of the study as explained in that article was: dont drink it. After explaining that coffee causes low' blood sugar levels, loss of vitamin B, skin problems, ulcers, headaches, some heart trouble, upsets insulin mechanisms, and that it goes hand in hand with cigarettes and its dangers, the article concludes: What perhaps is the worst thing about coffee that can be deduced from various sources from nutrition experts to heart specialists is that, like most stimulants, coffee, too, can become habitual. More and more is required for stimulation, for the daily pickup or lift. And this is where the habit becomes pernicious, for while it proit is merely whipvides a feeling of ping up the endocrine glands (most usually the adrenal glands) and is thus masking fatigue and other underlying problems that may range well-bein- 16 CHURCH WEEK ENDING APRIL 14, 1973 from vitamin deficiency to faulty metabolism to emotional depression. IT IS INTERESTING that Dr. Oglesby Paul, professor of medicine at Northwestern University School of Medicine, said this about coffee in his book, Postgraduate Medicine In a study of 1,718 men those who drank five or more cups of coffee a day it was shown that these men had an increased incidence of angina pectoris and myrocardial infarction. Dr, Paul indicated that caffeine has a significant effect on blood lipides (fats and substances normally present in the body) and carbohydrate metabolism. fat-lik- e He said that several studies have demonstrated an association between the coffee habit and an increased incidence of coronary disease. Gradually we learn from science what we first heard years ago from the prophets. But', how many coffee drinkers are willing to believe either? 26, 1835. - - (Another in o series) ' |
