Both tourists and moviegoers will discover this isolated area in the southwest coran area that is only three ner of Utah miles long and four miles wide and is flanked on the west by undulating hill country and on the north and east by ply rising basalt cliffs. One of the biggest boosts in aiding the area's popularity should be a new Walt Disney movie. They might be called 'ships of the desert,' but they almost In "One Little Indian," he had to hde a camel in several scenes. "We spent two weeks in the Coral Sands area." Garner said. "Those camels just would not cooperate. We had to shoot some scenes 20 times. The camels wouldn't stop where they were supposed to. They reared. they fm7e when they were supposed to move and they did not obey. Not many people will want to ride camels in there. The Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Reserve are located 11 miles off Highway 89. with two roads leading into the area, one 13 miles from Kanab, another four miles southeast of Mt. Carmel Junction. Challenge still there for drummer By Nick Snow Deseret News staff writer It's a fair distance from the days of the West Coast jazz sound to scoring Shakespeare at the Los Angeles Music Center. but Shelley Manne has taken the journey with relative ease and with plenty of interesting stops along the way. "It's a funny thing calling it 'the West Coast sound because so many of us came from somewhere else." the d jazz drummer recalled during a two-da- y Visit to the University of Utah earlier this week for lectures and clinics. "Shorty Rogers and I came in from Nevv York; Bud Shank and Jimmy Giuffrie came from the Nlidwest. I guess it was because so many of the same gruys were involved in recording that a lot of it had the same sound." L.A.-base- Marine remembers the period during s the as "a time when we were trying to challenge ourselves. We'd experiment with different forms not just the old pattern. but forms from Europe and elsewhere. We'd try to go musically beyond ourselves and, in doing that. I think we progressed. "Some of the writing by people like Giuffrie that would late be called 'Third Stream' was so involved that. listening to it. you couldn't tell where the composition itself elided and the improvisation began. But I think generally what came out of it was an opening up of our minds." Manne credits Stan Kenton and his early bands with laying the groundwork for the Third Stream composers. "He was always giving composers, people with e to say somesomething to say, a ella-icthing out of the norm. He was always open to new ideas. And I think some of that openness rubbed off on us." For hirr, the West Coast period gave him a chance to make the rhythm section more a part of the melodic line. "If you listen to my solo on 'Poco-Loco- .' for example, you won't hear so much an insistent beat but a melodic overtone. It's performed more in a mustal way than in. an exhibition way.
