Show SB DESERET NEWS, Thursday, May 20, 1971 Bavo EladioeE: Late Inning Uiiiiiiimiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiimi!iiiiiii!iiiiiiiiiiiii!iiiii!iiiiiimiiiiiiiiiiiiniii Melting Snow, Ski Growth . . . liiiiiiiiiliiiiiiiiiniiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiMiiiiiiiiiiHiiiimiiiiiHiiiMiiii ijh Immal One thing more certain than melting snow this time of year is that the Intermountain Division of the United States Ski Assn, will have a new Jeader following its spring convention this weekend at Burley, Idaho. Wes Deist can't run for selection. His nine terms) prohio-i- t years (three consecutive three-yea- r his seeking a fourth term. Th that keep Deist from seeking a fourth term also require that candidates be members of the board of directors. by-la- Already the rumor mill is grinding out names most likely to be thrown into the election circle. Those mentioned most frequently are Jim Roeh-forJackson Hole; Salt Lake Citys Robert Spring-ireyand Pinedales (Wyo.) Sonny Korfanta, a division president during the d, er mid-Sixtie- s. Rochford, last years alpine competitions chairman and Springireyer, a member of the board, are eligible to run" for that office. Korfanta must win a seat on the board Saturday before he can consider seeking I.D. presidency. Rochford and Springmeyer already are board members. . Progress Must Continue Something like $20,000 was reported in I.D. coffers two months ago when the groups executive secretary Margo Walters McDonald stepped out of that position. There is much vork to be done. Finding a proper place to spend that amount will require good judgment and foresight. I.D. has been a front runner the past half dozen years under Earl D. Walters (3 years) and Deist (2 years). Membership programs, coupon books and several other I.D. innovations are being copied about the country. As a result other divisions have experienced similar growth. Spending that $20,000 Isnt going to be as difficult as replacing it. And herein lies the challenge confronting the new president. ' Heres hoping that each dollar spent will be answered by a dollar earned. Or how about returning $2 for each $1 spent. Its possible! I Remember how Earl D. ballooned a 1,900 sagging membership to 11,007 inside his three-yea- r term? And remember, too, that he took a minus bankroll of $6,700 and left office with $20,498 in ,the meanwhile. And lets not forget the racer. That area of I.D. concern grew from 400 to 763 under Walters. As Deist prepares to leave office the racing circle is approaching the 1,000 figure. Heres hoping for more growth. Remember Good Old Hunt Days? Remember the good old deer hunting days? Back before 1925? When the deer herd entitled each hunter to a chance for his buck? , If you remember, recall also that only two seasons in the 20 years before 1925 enjoyed great- er success than that enjoyed by Utahs 1970 deer hunter. Thats right, 1970 saw hunters log 55.5 per , cent success. This, with 178,005 regular license holders in the field. Only three hunts between 1925 and 1950 can top that mark, 1941 when 60,000 hunters took 34,460 deer; in 1944 when 63 percent of the 64,672 took 40,743 buckskin and in 1948 when 56.3 percent of the hunt field logged 53,526 deer. Managing of Utahs deer herd began in 1951 the year doe hunting was permitted. Over 5,000 more buck were taken in 1970 then in 1951 with the 1970 doe mark of 30,510 close to the 51 figure of 31,244. Only seven years of the past 20 can show more buck taken than in 1970 when 68,243 were reported. Those years include 1955, (72,267) ; 1959 (72,850); 1960, (74,802); 1961, (71,979); 1962, (69.778) and 1964, (68,612). Let the record show that 178,005 hunters afield is a record, since such things were figured and that recent range rides and other deer herd investigations indicate another big year for 1971. -- Bill Pitching Fails S.L.
