Show gC T3 JULY 4, 1977 DESERET NEWS. MONDAY. National anthem SORCERER pfi 1:00, 3:10, 5:15, 7:30, 9:45 What is believed to be one of the oldest published editions of Francis Scott Keys immortal the like The anthem, Star-Spangl- which today, shot at Con- Ba.ner, far-fam- cord, is literally heard around the world, came to light m Philadelphia in 1918 There is no date on the face of the edition, but neatly inscribed on the back m ink is the notation, 1830, which, m view of the history of the copy and its general appearance, testifies to its being authentic. The copy was owned by William L Ward, an early resident of Philadelphia, who was born in the famous Blue Anchor Tavern m 1808. He died in 1885, and left the precious piece of music to his grandson, W. Ward Beam On the back, m addition to the date, 1830," there are a number of signatures To this list of names All good is superscribed, Whigs Taking as a working date of 1814 as the year in which Key wrote the words of the song, while he was aboard the firgate, Surprise, during the bombardment of Fort McHenry, Maryland, it would seem that that the publication year of the edition occurred even earlier than 1830 Even at that, the lapse of time between composition and publication would be only 16 years, a revatively short penod, considering the printing trade conditions that then obtained. A cursory glance at the edition, which may be called Carrs, in honor of it printer, discloses a curious error in the title itself. It is called A Panotic Song, one T having by some mischance been omitted But even this peculiarity is 'PQ plus "MONTY PYTHON and the HLYGRAa" 6:30 Silver 1:00, 4:30, 8:10. The anthem was first sung in a tavern near the Holiday Street Theater in Baltimore by one Ferdinand Durang And its popularity continued to grow steadily in the hearts of its countrymen, like Washington, ever afterwards, notwithstanding Congress refusal to enact legislation making it the national anthem until 1930 A Hg. outgrown Highland High School, Salt Palace special events room and other auditoriums On one occasion, were turned away because the 3,000 persons auditorium was not large enough to accommodate the crowds, Jelesnik recalls The concert, which is sponsoi ed by the Days ot Trust Funds ot the 47, the Music Performance Recording Industries and the oulWra, is tree Tickets must be obtained, howevei They are now available at all ZCMI stores ticket offices, Daynes Music Co , the Salt Palace, the Belvedere Apaitmeiit-Hote- l and the Newspaper Agency Corp , 143 South Technicolor- - Co hit No Deposit, No Return at!? 45.
