The cheapest gasoline here is the equivalent of $1.50 per gallon. With these prices. heavy taxes on gasoline- guzzling automobiles are unnecessary. But most British have been pleasantly surprised to discover that higher energy prices. which made conservation measures imperative. have resulted in real savings without any reality. Thus there is a constant search here for cheaper sources of power. Britain consumes only about half as much energy per person as the United States does, and not simply because the standard of living here is lower. Energy is so expensive here that the people are careful to conserve it. The most obvious difference be - -- - The turning point here. as elsewhere in the world, came in late 1973, when the 0. ;.17cl x L LI a .t.z7 &,,, - ,,,,' tA i 1 Pfr, rs1 cle r-- , r.-9- . t , 'i A - ill 91 :41 , CedS Otocg Arab petroleum producers boosted the price of oil in the aftermath of the Yom Kippur war. The British government. faced by that crisis, took no special steps to curb energy consumption beyond appealing to the population to conserve fuel volantarily. But the spiralling price of oil alone was enough to per5uade people to save energy. As a consequence, Britain's energy requirements have dropped by an estimated 6 per cent. which could represent a reduction in money terms of oil imports by close to $1 billion. 51 7- t - latt Wit e ctorg master Vil ( N.L I ,.....0001.2: CO3i. Letters from DESERET NEWS, MONDAY, lie,..iottiii Over the longer run, th(wgh challenge to Britain resembles the challenge to the United States. It is to conserve as much ebergy as possaile while exploring new sources of energy and that suggests that both sikles of year 204)0. the Atlantic will continue to he olvessed Given the cloudy skies that hang by energy for as far ahead as anyone over Britain much of the year, solar can imagine. 4 - Si 0 TIMM Britain has been lucky, 101,ke er, to have hit oil and natural as in the North Sea, and thee will be able to carry the country for a couple of decades ahead. But the production of North Sea oil and natural gas is expected to fall in the 1990s, and the energy scene then vill again look Idea k. Thus, it seems te me, the development of nuclear energy is going to be inevitable. Fortunately, the British now have the resources to develop ;ccuro nuclear installations at their leisure. The energy crisis ha not generated the same enthusiasm here for innovations as it has in the United States and other countries. There are plenty of experiments in Britain with solar energy and wind power, but at best these would not contribute to more than 5 per cent of British energy needs by the kt, ;1d B' '1 energy is a particularl clooniy vospoet. From a clinnoic view!Thint, Ilril, ito is in a much better position to exploit wind power, hut here too the pni,4,eet are don. In order to conipcto with CM entional power stitions. wital driven electrical generators would have to be installed on sites with merage wind speeds of 20 niile!, per hour or better. This would mean covering hilltops with huge windmills a notion that would certainly arouse Widespread esthetic opposition. In the Severn estuary. which separates Wales from southwest England. there is one of the best sites in the worhi for a tidal power station. But the CfPAS of constructing such a station arc prohibitive. On the other hand, wave pow' r as a source of energy is prevokin4 a good deal of Official intcre:t. and serieus research programs have Iwent,.., bed to explore a poleutial that could be enormous. .p ! t, , 4 , , i, |
