Show I 5 I g DESERET NEWS, TUESDAY, MAY 3, 1 977 Mayor raps plan to fire r 50 officers A proposal by Iht chairman of Saif Lake City's revenue raising committee to fire 50 policemen drew fire today from Mayor Ted L. Wilson. Committee chairman l.J. Wagner said Monday that the drop in traffic citations and fines is an indication that the Police Department is not doing its job or that drivers are obeying laws in greater numbers than before. In either case, Wagner said, a police force cut would help. Mayor Wilson and the other city commissioners in February appointed the special committee to find revenue in order to pay for wage increases already granted city employes. The committee is in the last throes of compiling a large list. Wagner's concern is that fines and forfeitures last year were $2 million on March 31, but amounted to only $1.14 million on the same date this year. Police officers have said that a switch to tne precinct system is normally accompanied by a drop in money collected through traffic fines because cities on the precinct system do not run traffic units. A cut in the police force has never tieen considered by the City Commission as a revenue saving measure, Mayor Wilson said. We will not use the meat axe approach. This may be the committees recommendation, but this commission is not considering that. Mayor Wilson said he was speaking for Public Safety Commissioner Glen N. Greener, who was ill today. i - - Mother's Day a very May 8th special day indeed. We've gone all out to make buying the ideal gift easy for you. These are just a few of our favorites. Meeting with a task force composed of educators, governmental and civic leaders from throughout the western states, Phillip Sirotkin, executive director, WICHE, Boulder, Colo., told the group a program of sharing is needed. We have been concerned because of the proliferation of graduate programs in the universities, coupled with the high costs of education and diminishing resources, he said. Under a resource-sharin- g program regional centers would be designated, and students from western states could attend graduate programs in other states for cost a the resident tuition. Present student exchange programs 15 which must be underwritten by are currently operating the home states with a support fee to tire state where the student attends a university. With regional centers universities could phase out programs in which only a few students are enrolled, send them into the WICHE program and deploy funds for increasing quality programs in other areas, Sirotkin said. Some opposition is expected from institutions which might hestitate to give up programs, Sirotkin said. Funding for programs could be sought within the next few months if schools in the western states agree on need, he said. i & Presto Burger, reg. 142)9 Great American fry in Machine, reg. 15.95 .
