"I never had a family, w, prison is like a family to me." And the Salt Lake County Jail offers a warm meal. The food there, he said, is better than it is in most jails. But, Ferguson said, enough is enough. When he is released Jan. 5, he wants to settle in Utah and learn a trade. Although he had been here only two weeks before his arrest. Ferguson likes the area. "It's as good a place as any I have been," he said. "The people seem friendly. And those who have worked with me seem to care, they don't try to pass the buck as much as others have." Withdrawn, gentle, friendly, with a sense of humor about himself, Ferguson seems at times a little like a child who never had an opportunity to grow up. For good reason. His is one of the more bizarre tales of prison life. He was born in the Rockwell City (Iowa) Women's Reformatory, where his mother was an inmate. He has never met her, or discovered her identity.
