With such early detection, removal of the breast is "100 percent effective in stopping the cancer, said Dr Robert McDivitt, professor and chairman of the division of surgical pathology. McDivitt said two people are key in early the trained detection pathologist who examines the cells, and the patient herself who, using fmds an abnormality in the breast. He said women should look not just for a lump, but for anything that just feels different. It may be a firmness or a lumpiness that was not previously present. And it can be very small, perhaps only millimeters in size. A woman is used to what her breasts feel like, and at the first sign of change, she should go said to her doctor, McDivitt, who has been studying early cancer detection for 15 years. McDivitt travels in this country and abroad trying to educate pathologists and radiologists in cancer detection in its early stages. We suspect, that it takesjrom stx months to perhas several yeart for these cells to develop into invasive cancer, he said. But the woman who waits, he added, is risking her life.
