For all parts of the body to function, for the muscles to do their work, the body burns food as fuel. It burns fuel and oxygen to make energy, which is mostly heat. Lern.i.0 7r------ thermostat to con- trol the amount of heat let off so that the body temperature stays at or about 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit. There are several ways in which the body lets off heat. Your breath is warm because air from your lungs carries off some heat. Waste passing out of the body also carries off heat. The body lets off much more heat through the skin. It always lets off some heat this way, and that is why the skin is warm to the touch. But the thermostat controls this. For example, if the body is getting cold, the capillaries under the surface of the skin become smaller; less blood passes near the skin and so less heat is given off. When the body very hot, another cooling system begins to work. This is sweat. Sweat is a salty liquid produced by the sweat glands. Little tubes lead from the sweat glands to the openings in the skin called pores. From the pores sweat spreads over the skin. Win the New Book of Knowledge.
