They also should know that no valid comparisons can be made between schools, states or individuals on the basis of scholarships awarded. The Merit Scholar Program begins each fall as high school juniors who wish to enter the competition take the combined Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT) and National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT). semifinalists are the highest scoring students in their respective states. As a group they represent fewer than one-haof one percent of the nations high school seniors. The number of semifinalists for Utah (94 this year) is proportional to Utahs percentage of the nations total senior class. As a group, the Utah semifinalists may have scored lower, or higher, than some other states semifinalists. Semifinalists qualify as finalists by submitting recommendations and by taking the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). They also are asked to name the college or university of their choice, a point you should remember.
