They found they had common interests in art and drawing and together evolved the idea of Captain office. The first issue was on the stands across Canada in the early part of this past summer, and the second issue was out in early October. In a short article in the back of the first issue in July 1975, Brother Comely introdixed himself and Brother Leishman, who is now serving in the Belgium Brussels Mission. Brother Comely's mention of his conversion to the Church and his firm declaration that his comic will abide by high :noral standards elicited many questions about his religion. By mail, by telephone and in person he has had the opportunity to explain to many the restoration of the gospel. He keeps a supply of Church literature which he hands out when the occasion calls for it. At news conferences "the second question usually asked concerns the Church," he said. Then Brother Leishman had to go into the Canadian Arctic to work so he could finance a mission, which left Brother Comely to finish the preliminary work for the book. "I was always prayerful about the matter," he said. "I felt very strongly I was doing the right thing." While still working full time designing embroidery patterns, Brother Comely researched the intricacies of printing and distributing a comic. "When this man took my wife and inc to dinner one day," Brother Comely said, "he was very respectful of our beliefs, lie insisted that no one drink alcoholic beverages in our presence, and asked if we would say a prayer on the food before we began to eat." At first glance, Captain Canuck is not so different than his American counterparts Muscular and colorfullyattired in a space-ag- e costume, he whizzes about Canada in jets, rockets and other vehicles in a constant campaign to defeat the villains who threaten the security and freedom of the continent. But the difference shows up when the super hero bows his head in prayer before embarking on a mission, and after another mission, attributes his success to the fact that "God was helping us." The second issue of Captain Canuck includes an article by Victor B. Cline concerning the effect violence and immorality in movies and television have on young people. It is this violence and immorality which Brother Comely hopes to combat. While his hero does find himself trading blows with the enemy, he manages to defeat them without unnecessary gore and death. his comic is not like other comics, which he said contain "page after page of hacking off heads." The man behind Captain Canuck has an exciting mission of his own. Recently called to be mission leader in his e branch, he works with the full-tim- missionaries proselyting and teaching, and is involved in fellowshipping new members. Brother Comely and his wife, Evelyn, a convert whom he baptized, were married in the Alberta Temple in Ca rdston. They have two small sons. |
