My husband and I know what's going on with Grandma, but we didn't want the kids to find out. She has more than one boyfriend. Yesterday, my husband's sister phoned' about drawing names for Christmas, which we always do at Grandma's. My problem is my. kids don't want to go to Grandma's at all now. Should we tell Sister why my kids don't want to draw names? Also, should I tell my mother-in-lawhat my kids saw? Or should we act like nothing happened? I don't know what to do anymore. The place is actually four floors crammed with kitchen supplies, most of which have been imported from France. Among his favorite creations is the pan Rudolph Stanish uses at all the omelet parties. It's solid, heavy aluminum. On his shelves are a special pan for making French bread and a special receptacle for quiche, to say nothing of a bag of aluminum beans that keep the pastry from shrinking and help it turn brown. One of the oddities in the shop is a giant copper pot. ::' , .. i CERNED "I feel there is a unique feeling between young person and an old person that is not duplicated on any other level. In many ways grandparents are more understanding, easier to talk to than parents. Also many grandparents feel and act younger around their grandchildren." And one of the most important contributions a grandparent can make, he says, is to provide an example of growing old. Ile told of an uncle he recently visited in man the hospital. "Here was a suffering from spine degeneration, in great pain. Yet he would joke with the nurses, had a good word for everyone. "The day is coming when we all will face old age, life's miseries. "An example of how to cope and continue on in spite of adversity, an example of the courage to endure, to laugh despite suffering is worth a great deal." And that, says Dr. White, is one of the greatest gifts a grandparent can give a parent or a grandchild. s difference ,04;i;'4.k41: 'g. ".,',':';- ;:.-4- ' k 15.ilWeilkairw' ., AL.' A degree of permissiveness may be a good thing, says Dr. White, in that grandparents, who have been through years of fads and fashions, can often tolerate behavior that parents won't. But grandparents should also be aware of the things parents are trying to accomplish with their children, says the gerontology specialist. "They must realize there are different ways of raising kids." Above all, he says, grandparents need to realize that advice is good if given in the proper spirit. "People take advice when they ask for it, but they often resent being told what to do." "Grandparents often see their! grandchildren as a symbol of life. They view the youngsters as a part of them that will continue forever." Grandparents also help grandchildren understand the flow of things over time, help them realize that what we have today is built upon what others did, said the doctor. They have an important role in upholding family tradition. They can tell youngsters what their parents and uncles and aunts were like in earlier years (using good judgment, of course) and they have a lot to offer on what society was like in those days. Grandparents should not, however, cautions Dr. White, fall into the "in my day" syndrome. They need to realize that times change. technology changes, attitudes and values change. "Old" does not mean "better" any more than "new" is a synonym of "worse." There are some values that should be passed on, but there are some changes that must be accepted. This applies particularly to the area of frequently a source of conflict among parents and grandparents. said ts,,,,,,,,:,. .4' '''''.0. ,,, ,--, .:.: .: '''..
