The Oriental poppy is a native of the mountain plains from Turkey eastward to Iran and was brought to England from Armenia in 1714. Originally available only in scarlet, it now can be chosen in white, pink, rose-pinsalmon, orange, even purplish, besides shades of red. Blooms may be had, if different varieties are planted, from May through June. trs 'Vf - Major cause ,J "C of J?2r sun or light, .hade in ordinary garden soil, although they will do best in rich loam. Their huge satin crinkly blooms with black centers are among the most magnificent of garden flowers. Plant the roots so the crowns are 2 to 3 inches below the surface. Place roots at an angle in the soil so the crowns will shed water. Keep the soil evenly moist after planting, but protect the crowns from water to avoid possible crown rot. Some of the favorite varieties are Harvest Moon, clear orange-yelloWhite May Curtis, watermelon-rose- ; King, pure white with blue spots; Salmon Glow, Salmon-orangwith fringed deep rose-pin- k edges; and Helen Elizabeth, very crinkled LaFrance pink. Peonies are long-tim- e favorites, hardy and easy to grow. Almost any garden can find a place for them. They need plenty of sunshine, good drainage, and prefer a rich, deep, loam soil. Spade to a depth of one foot, working in plenty of humus and plant food. Once established, peonies like to stay in the same place for years, and since they are heavy feeders it pays to do a good job when planting them. There are a few donts to consider when planting. Avoid setting them too close to trees and shrubs or where other peonies have previously grown. Be careful not to set them too deep. In sandy soil the buds should be covered by 3 inches, in day soil not over 2 inches, Dont plant them too close together. They need at least 3 feet around them. Mulch them the first winter, and be sure not to damage the tender dark red shoots when they emerge next spring. They bloom luxuriantly In all the pinks, white, cream, reds. Each flower is a huge pincushion and most are deliciously fragrant. I am partial to the big single Japanese forms with their Huffy golden centers. But all peonies are beautiful and they make handsome flower arrangements.
